Change resolution - Silent Hill 4 PC

Post by arwain »

Hello, I have Silent Hill 4: The room for PC and after installing it I've discovered that unfortunatly the max resolution is 1024x768 (after deleting the CheckSpec.dll). Since I have a widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1680x1050 I tried to find something useful to fix this problem and I found a website that show how to change the values. And it worked.
I decided to post here because I would share this information.

The program which helps is Artmoney (the free edition), it's safe, and you can find it here: http://www.artmoney.ru/e_download.htm.

Here is the link that explain how to fix the values:
http://www.artmoney.ru/articles/e41/widescreen.htm

The game mentioned is Need for Speed but you can apply the same method with Silent Hill 4 (and for every single game).
As far as I know, there is no patch or other utilities that can help beside this.

Here there is an image at 1680x1050:

Hope it helps.

Very nice discovery! I also got some size problems with other PC games and I'll try to use it on them. I'm sure this will help a lot of gamers. Thanks!

Oh and yes, they have all the SH games ported for the PC(although not quite sure with Origins), but I think heard that the PC Version has some changes from the PS version and have given a lower score in reviews. Not sure though - arwain's pic look very similar to the PS Version(nice).

I'm also very desperate for the other Silent Hill games - I only played Silent Hill 4 yet, and I really want them...... 1, 2 and 3....... Can't download the PC version 'cause of our CD rom problems, and the stores stopped selling the older SH games(although I did find Silent Hill 3 in one store, great game but it got "stuck" after the scene where Heather kills the Closer in the mall near the beginning.....darn, I was having so much fun and excitement back then). I wish they make a remake of the first 3 - without decreasing any quality from them.

I need Silent Hill!

(My english isn't that good.)
Can you upload some more pics from the game in that size?

(Great link btw, I'll use it later when I'm in a mood for installing it and stuff..)

Check ebay and amazon for the PC versions of the games if that's what you're looking for. They have 2, 3, and 4 for the PC. There is a Silent Hill PC version, but it's not an official port, so we can't talk about where to find it.

And thanks to OP for finding this. That will come in handy!

Silent Hill 1 does not have a PC version, but you could buy a Playstation 1 version of the game and then use legal emulation tools to play it on your PC. (I recommend the emulator psX, as it strives for accuracy in regards to functionality).

While resolution helps, I do think the original poster was using increased Anti-Aliasing and Isometric Filtering settings on their own graphics card. Their post was to show how to use abstract resolution sizes for modern monitors.

I'm going to give this a shot because I just beat 1-3.

I'm looking to play at 16:10, 1920x1200.

In arwain's screenshot,
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/1439 ... 357ft6.jpg

It looks like the game is really stretched, which to me says that he was able to get the correct resolution but not the right FOV.

In SH3 my wFOV and hFOV are 0.91 and 1.1

So I guess I could try that, right?

But I'm not sure which integers the FOVs are in SH4? Just 100 and 100?

Also, to find the resolution strings, you just do a search on whatever resolution you have set in-game right?

And arwain, do you have AOL Messenger? Because it would be cool if you came up with a tutorial on how to do this.

Thank you <3

Heya reverie87, as you said, I was able to get only the correct resolution and not the right FOV. I'm definitely sure that SH3's FOV works only for it and not for SH4.
To find the resolution strings, yes, you have to change it in-game.

If you follow step by step the tutorial I'm sure you can do it. Also, you don't have to do all those passages each time (only the first time) you launch SH4 because if you save the strings with the width and height values in a file (.amt), you just have to change them (I know that it's not the best option but it's better than nothing).

Anyway I sent you a PM ;).

Thanks for the quick reply Arwain. So I guess we can just play around with the FOV until it looks right, and we could post our results back up here for others.

The question is, what are the FOV strings? 100? I'll contact you through MSN and we'll figure this out together.

I really like your avatar by the way.

Looks good. I'm sticking with the PS2 version of Silent Hill 4, but cool find nonetheless.

How did you manage to select Silent Hill 4 The Room as the process. When I try to do it, this program says unable to open the proces. The program works fine with Silent Hill 2, but it doesn't work with Silent Hill 3 and 4. At least not on my PC.

It worked fine for me, but Ican't get the resolutions to single out. I ended up with about 80 addresses in the bar after all filtering was done, and after i changed the results, it did nothing for the screen in SH3.

Holy shit is that quality sexy...
Also, Silent Hill 2, 3, 4, Homecoming, were the only ones ported to PC. Origins, Shattered Memories, Play Novel, 1, etc, were not ported to PC.

Also, the program works perfectly for me on 2-4. Thanks for sharing :)

Here is the solution for getting Silent Hill 4 to work in widescreen and in higher resolutions. Follow the directions on this link:

http://widescreengamingforum.com/dr/sil ... -4-room/en

I'm running SH4 in 1920x1080 (16:9) and it works perfectly! To use a 16:9 resolution (1920x1080, 1280x720) you need to use the values of 0.85, 0.60 for you FOV.

Here are some pics that I took from the results...

It's so sweet being able to now play Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4 in 1080p widescreen!

Yunno, with that other thread about playing the games in HD which you made yourself, reviving this old corpse was somewhat less than necessary.
