Actually, the project that would become SH4 started right after SH2 was released. So, no, not a one-year development cycle.carneeval wrote:They made it within a year, with the things they did with the other games and the two or so years they spent it could have had a lot more.GioGio wrote:Improve what exactly? the game is fine the way it is, nothing to improve, people expect to much.
How do you think they could of have improved Silent Hill 4?

To me, SH4: The Room is a so-called "perfect game". Nothing to be changed.

Well, I can handle the limited inventory, the ghosts and Eileen's low A.I. (to some degree). What I can't stand is the burping sound of those Patient monsters! They suck! The Patients and the Gum heads(monkey things that tend to steal your items) piss me of cause they are ridiculous and the sounds they make are annoying too. There is no way I would miss them, if the developers hadn't put them in the game.
They should've just extend it's development for a couple of months. It looks fairly rushed in some areas. I remember how excited I was when seeing the 9 minutes E3 trailer. It looked like this may be the best SH ever!
I would remove only the escort missions, even if this greatly decreases the game's lenght. They're just awkward and IMO are the worst design choice made for a SH game, along with Origins's breakable weapons.

Silent Hill 4 remains my second favorite Silent Hill, even though Shattered Memories is trying very hard to change that. The ghosts were annoying, though they did their job when it came to scares. I mostly only had a major problem with the escorting near the end; I find that sort of thing very bothersome.

I hate escorting in games. Natalya in goldeneye, ashley in RE4, etc. All annoyances.strigoitsepesh wrote:Silent Hill 4 remains my second favorite Silent Hill, even though Shattered Memories is trying very hard to change that. I thought the final battle was really easy. The time limit put on it for Eileen kinda makes it tougher though
Sweet, now I have enough money to go buy my own Insane Cancer. Or something.

after thinking about it for a while, I think Silent Hill 4's biggest sin (for me anyway) is that the environments are too tedious
now Silent Hill 1-3 all had their tedious moments (for me the sewer levels in Silent Hill 1 and 3 are tedious and parts of the labyrinth level in 2 is tedious), but despite having some cool things to see, the levels rely too much on "copy pasting" ESPECIALLY the water prison
I'm fine with the concept of mini levels being visited through a hub instead just one long trek through the town or whatever, but I don't think it would've hurt too make the levels just liiiiiittle bit more linear instead of "wandering around trying to figure out what to do"
there's also no point in forcing players to play each level twice, but WITH GHOSTS! that's just an artificial way to expand the length
also, it needed a joke ending, seriously

This is mainly what I'm thinking. It could have solved alot of problems, including the painfully obvious looping of audio that everyone is complaining about.Pendulum wrote:They should've just extend it's development for a couple of months. It looks fairly rushed in some areas.
Less visits to the room would have been nice. Maybe along with the ability to save outside of the room and more things to do in the room when you had to go back. And yes, less(or no) escorting.
But more importantly, get rid of the belching Patient monsters. I fucking hated those things, prominent example of bad/lazy monster design.
Other then that, good game, one of my favorites.
This was my first Silent Hill game, ever, I've beat it many times. I've also played and beat Two and Three.
Out of those three, Silent Hill 4 is my favorite. Why? Well... I'm a dark person and I have dark tastes in movies, books, and music. Video games are no exception. This game really fucks with the psychological side of your brain. Two and three do too, but not as much as four.
But regardless, it has problems. For one, It's too bright for me; I would have liked darker rooms. Second...
...
Actually, that's about it for me. Other than that, I have no real problems. I actually liked the inventory screen, it's a hassle but at least it adds some flavor of originality and difficulty. Plus even though it's not 100% realistic, it more real than holding 400+ items in your back pocket.
This game has always been misunderstood and way underrated by it's fans. Silent hill will have to keep its roots, but if the following sequels are copies of Silent Hill 2, then this series is going down. And that will be partly the fans fault for disrespecting this terrific game when Team Silent tried something different. Small to moderate changes are good for video games, huge changes and clones are their worst nightmare.

I actually found this game to my liking, so not really much for me to say about it. Maybe some better textures to some of the surroundings, and well... more areas instead of reusing? Not that I was really that annoyed by it, but it did feel a little "not-enough-tajm!".

4 words: Make. Henry. Super Saiyan. Nah I'm kidding, lol.
I agree that the game felt rushed in some areas, like the Escape ending for example. The escorting would have best been left out of the game as it lessons the feel of isolation and adds a chore of escorting Eileen around. What I would have done, would be focusing more on the isolation with the faint hope of saving Eileen. That way, you still have the sense of isolation with 2 goals: escape this nightmare and save Eileen. Basically what they did only done in a better way. I would have also improved the Escape ending to better reward the player for rescuing Eileen and clearing out all the hauntings. Of course i suck at doing stuff so my idea would have probably been executed worse, lol.

I liked this game....the concept of being locked up in your room with no connection to the outside world, while your apt slowly descended into madness was a great theme....it was always kinda creepy knowing that your apt no longer safe for you to take a break from the otherworld, and the story was imo one of the strongest in the series.
The only issues i had with the game was the interaction with the ghosts...it felt a bit awkward trying to fight them especially when you're on that escalator....whenever i got a chance to pin those "main" ghosts, i did it.
The only other issue i had was with the design level of the forest...that level didn't feel like a forest at all,...the design itself felt very juvenile and rushed and the sections of it just felt "boxed" as it was seen on the map....terrible level design...
^^Those two issues really don't take away from the experience tho....i didn't mind revisiting the levels either later on in the game because within the context of the story, it made sense...

Hmmh..
I'm not actually against the travelling between apartment and otherworld like most of people, still I think that there would be some savepoints on otherworld.
-Darker areas and flashlight attached to Henry's Express Fashion's shirt's pocket
-Apartment world doesn't need that much blood on hallways. It looks pinky =(
-A bit more music and weird noises, also some invisible monster somewhere would rock.
-Longer time in hospital, I mean, hospitals are always cool.
-Last but not least, the INVENTORY *dramatic look* There is no point having limited inventory, it just sucks.
I liked the game somehow, it was one of the best. There is nothing much to change, but flashlight would be cool. I don't find that much things what are wrong, but inventory really irritates me and apartments halls are just.. well they could have been done better.
EDIT: OH I nearly did forgot!! Most annoying thing in game were the annoying Lesser Ghosts, there should have been possibility to kill them, if not normally, putting maybe candle next to ghost and then shooting it, would have killed it. Too bad they were always on my arse in apartment worlds part. 2
