Yes...its supposed to signify the 'otherworld' or Alessa's world, where she has control over what occurs there.

I like your theory but if everyone is already dead then why would they be afraid of dying when everything around them is trying to kill them? of course they wouldnt have known they were dead but the fact that everything is still trying to kill them, if succeded then what?

The games hint at otherwise.. There is and was an undeniable otherworldy force to the town prior to Alessa's birth or the cult's attempts at bringing God into the world. Strange instances happening without explanation, for instances.

While the movie may not have taken this idea, until there's evidence to directly oppose the thought it's still possible. I personally don't think this was the idea with the film, however. Alessa was granted the ability to create another world and monsters because of the Dark One - or the Dark One created it using Alessa's mind as a blueprint. But whatever the Dark One really wanted from Alessa still escapes me. What should a demon care about the suffering of one little girl?..

Yeah, when the sirens sound off that is alessa's dark world coming in, and may I just say you have to have ALOT, and I mean ALOT of anger to turn a world dark yourself. Damn she was pissed. LOL.
