I think he meant that the Janitor was the least changed among the monsters of silent hill from his human form. He was merely bent over backwards while the others are mutated or deformed. Discounting Pyramid Head of course since we don't know what his face looks like under that KKK-ish hood.

I’m not sure why they swarmed around Pyramid Head, but I don’t think it really had that much significance. You notice in the church scene, the roaches aren’t there, only in and around the bathroom where Colin resided.

He might not be very fast or menacing, but his little friends are. And as an added bonus, once they clean the flesh from your bones, he can mop up the mess!
I thought he more-or-less summoned the decay, not really the roaches. I don't think Alessa would have given him that much power in her mind... although with the sexual connotations, they make some sense.

Soooo, I'm retracting my initial thought there.

The roaches don't swarm around PH- it seems more like they're swarming around him, as in trying to avoid, y'know, since everything PH touches kind of dies. They just happened to be going in the same direction. Bugs aren't exactly the most intelligent of creatures; they're a bit single minded.

As for the idea of his too-human appearance, there's a lot of theories about why the more humanoid creatures look the way they do, but here's mine. He's being punished- simple as that. Same with the nurses, who retain their beautiful bodies but have distorted faces (Alessa saw only Lisa's face, remember? So that's where the hatred was focused). Any one who's ever been... violated in any way, has the image of their violator all but physically burned into their minds, and would want to see the offending individual as helpless and hurt as they. It stands to reason, then, that Alessa would not want to change his physical appearance, so she would always know it was he being punished, but also that she isn't able to! God knows it's what I'd do!
You'll be missed. You were missed. I am missing you.

Now that I think about it... the Janitor seemed like he would fit better in 13 Ghosts, no? All the ghosts there sort of resemble his condition.

Yeah, that would have worked. For some reason I really wanted to watch that the other night and finally convinced my wife to watch it with me. I had forgotten how crappy that movie was. But the ghosts were cool.

Agreed. Why is it the only good things about modern horror movies tend to be the monster designs? How sad...

Or the grey children.
I don't know.
I see the human-ness in all the monsters.
They were once people, after all.

I think the Janitor fit very well.

I thought the janitor fit in perfectly, actually. The creators of Silent Hill even said that they liked to make their enemies with a human feel to them to make them more disturbing.

Oh, and replying to something someone else said...

I think that horror movies are too "In your face" nowadays. It loses mystery, these things. In the old horror movies that were terrifying, sometimes you never really saw the causes....and with all that black and white, it was hard to make out things in the dark.

Janitor had lots of meaning behind his character, and he fit just as well as the Nurses or any other SH monster.

Good point.

Prolly lots of people here a familiar with this but the Janitor would also fit in the Hellraiser movies, or be one of Clive Barker's tortured souls.

Nonetheless, Janitor still freaked me out in the movie. The screaming, the tongue. Ugh. Did the job for me anyway.

I thought it was a nice little attempt at the SH creature but I don't think it took an insane amount of brain power to think up of at all.

There's a clear easily readable meaning from Collin shown in the movie I guess:
mollested Alessa when she was a kid so this is her punishment on him, when he moves he has to drag himself around on his pelvic/penile area (rendering that member of his body...hmm you can imagine) in that barbed wired crap all over the place in the dark alternate world.

You're right here, though some of them try and create something of a personal mythos. (kind of like how hellraiser did) the most recent one that comes to mind is Ghost Ship. But yeah, movies like 13 ghosts really seem like a waste of big budget.

SH on the other hand really gave us horror fans what we are looking for.

Hmm....this thing takes alot of contemplation, no?

The Janitor had the same feel. The same tension. The only real difference is how obviously vulgar he was and we were like "Okay, we didn't have to fight THIS bitch in the game, so wtf..." I think he fit in with the mood. He was just as terrifying as other things, and personally, scared the hell out of me.

Now, the Silent Hill theme. We all know this already, but the monsters in Silent Hill are reflections, remnants if you will, of the past and all were once people. Mr. Colin dude told a story, and was a reflection of Alessa's torture as a child. He represented how wicked these people were to her, and how vengeful Alessa was. Everything about him is in some way connected to the final monster in the movie. Right down to the barbed wire.

So how does Janitor not fit in with the mood or the theme?

It was just a feeling that he somehow didn't jive with what gamers in the know expected of Silent Hill's monsters... ah well, maybe it's because he's the new kid at school and he still hasn't gotten out of the outcast newbie status...

I thought the Janitor fit perfectly into the movie, he was a shocking monster and I wanted to see some shocking scenes. I will never forget those sounds he, made nor his attitude, he made no attempt to hide his filthy sexual desires as he flicked his tounge at Rose as if saying "Come here and I will lick you out baby!"
Never before have we had a peadophille monster in Silent hill, absolute pure genius i thought.
It shows that the evil of Silent hill has no boundries.
He is my all time favourite monster.

AnneMarie wrote:I've read that he wasn't the corpse in the game.

I must say though, he was by far the funniest of the monsters... total S&M. Colin, bondage with barbed wire... "Rose, let me out of this contortionist position!" He tried to say "My tongue's fucked from all that licking and she's left me like this for years, she told me she was only going out to buy KY Jelly!"

Personally, I thought he fit in to the movie good enough for me... but I'm easy!
LOVES IT!!! :D

Masahiro Ito>Gans

The janitor looked more at home in Hellraiser. So did the ending "boss" scene.
