I know that he doesn't look 100% like James, but i've always thought William H Macy would fill the role perfectly. He's a mighty fine Actor, very diverse for different roles and ultimately (or at least this made me make the initial connection) he sounds exactly like James in the game.

Seriously, play SH2 again and you can definitely hear William H Macy saying "Mary?"

He looks like the superintendent of SH4. Or more precisely, James' father.

Cary Elwes -- I think that's a pretty good choice for James. He's a kick ass actor.

Bill Pullman? naah... I enjoy seeing him in a few movies but for my opinion I could never take him serious as James...

I admit that Sean Bean doesn't have the greatest physical similarity, but when I think of how he played Chris in the movie the feeling is almost disturbingly right. Bean really imbibed the character with that mix of single-mindedness and barely concealed selfishness which lies at the heart of James Sunderland, and as a result it almost makes him seem more physically fitting in the role too. I'd love to see the sequel pick up with Chris as the main character looking for Rose, and virtually enact the Silent Hill 2 storyline exactly as it is with those two alterations. If anything the pursuit of his wife over his adopted daughter would take the selfishness already inherent in James to a whole other level. If done properly they could even substitute Sharon/Alessa into Laura's place, especially if they pushed the 'Sharon has become the Reaper' suggestion from the first movie.
I agree... and even had the almost same thoughts myself

Fuck yes. That works just as well as Aaron Eckhart. If you dyed his hair blonde, of course.

EDIT: Upon further reflection, Aaron Eckhart would make the best James.

I'm probably nuts, but I think Christian Bale could play James well (Equilibrium).

I like the Dennis Leary and the guy from saw are good canidates for James look alikes but as one person said the actor has be convincing as the character. Then again maybe it's better to see a video of both of them and judge for yourselves.

Denis Leary in one of his comedy scenes.

Now a trailer for the movie Saw with Carey Elwes in it they even have the toilet scene from SH2!

Also for the distant third candidate Aaron Eckhart.

Now that I watch them I have to go with Aaron Eckhart first and Carey Elwes as second.

Christian Bale could pull it off, he's a really great actor. The problem will be getting him in the project.

I think Christian Bale would make a great choice as well but he's probaby too busy with portraying Batman.

I think Christian Bale looks somehow too healthy. James shoud be a bit bloated faced and perhaps a bit sickly, like he hasn't been eating and especially drinking the right things lately. Maybe if Bale drank enough beer he'd be really good.
Dennis Leary? Seriously?

I can just see James walking along killing Mannequins with the wooden plank singing "I'm An Asshole".
 That would be really cool.

Well, that's a good point. He also has those sort of sad eyes. He certainly wouldn't be a bad choice.

What's important is that the characters looks like not someone who is very sad, but rather someone who's been very depressed for three years. Also, for me the voice is very important. I love James's voice, though i'm probably the only one. He looks and sounds like such a nice guy, he could never hurt a fly.

I could really see Tim Robbins as James Sunderland. Although he perhaps doesn't look exactly like him, there's something in his look that captures something very relevant in James's character. He was in Jacob's Ladder too so it would feel like a circle closing. Also, you would never expect him to (Silent Hill 2 spoiler)
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
kill his wife.
Plus he's a terrific actor, maybe too good.

Wait! Holy shit, i just looked something on dictionary.com and guess what:
James (jāmz) Pronunciation Key
n. Abbr. Jas. or Js. or Jm
See Table at Bible.

OMG it's a Sign!
I can't believe i earned 10 Silent Hill cash for this.
