A graphical masterpiece

Heather finds out why it's true that you shouldn't talk to strangers. Or look in mirrors, quite honestly.

A graphical masterpiece

Post by Houtakiboy »

I would just like to say one thing:

I know that Silent Hill 3 is all of 3 years old know. But visually it has SOOO stood the test of time. It remains having to this day, in my opinion, the best graphics in all of the SH series (despite The Room came a year or so later, but it was rushed, we all agree on that). Not only that, I think its the best graphics I have ever seen on a PS2 game.

Anyone care to refute this, or add some praise of their own?

I agree with you, the graphics of SH3 is simply breath-taking. It's the best I have seen from a SH3 game. Konami was really smart using rust/blood effects to make things look better (since detailed pattern can mask lower quality renders).
Not to mention the car scene when:

Douglas and Heather are in the car, going to Silent Hill

Such a good scene. It looked totally realistic without going crazy with the detail outside the car. I think the character models in SH4 are marginally better, but SH3 looks the best all-round.

My only complaint is Heather's hair. What, is each segment weighted like a pendulum? Watch whenever she shakes her head.

Silent Hill 3 is one of the best looking games on the PS2 along with Metal Gear Solid 3 and Gran Turismo 4.

Final Fantasy X-2, GT4, MGS3 have the best graphics on the PS2, no doubt. But indeed, SH3's are indeed spectacular and of a very different kind to all the others, they are definately some of the best done graphics on the console.

Mainly when she's walking upstairs.

Though I must agree- even some of the new games being released for the PS2 don't match the graphics of SH3.
SH3 is visually beautiful.

I find it very odd that SH4 didn't look as good as SH3.

Perhaps technically the textures were more detailed etc. in SH4?

But clearly, they were put to better use in the darker SH3 which used the graphics more skillfully.

SH3 is defenitely one of the best looking PS2 games even to this day. The character models in SH4 look almost as good, if not just as good as SH3's were to me, but the environments seem blander.

You gotta remember, SH4 was pretty rushed.

I think of SH3 as a dark and beautiful aesthetic...It's a work of art.

I was quite confused with that as well.

I agree that SH3 is one of the most artisticly beautiful & disturbing games visually and audio. I thought SH4 was a step backwards from SH3.

I was amazed at some of the cut scenes in one wayyyy back when it came out, and the same with SH2 when james is in the bathroom, but 3 deff has some great graphics and enviroments, I still need to finish 4 though.

Oh, that animation was horrible! The first stairwell you go through at the start always makes me laugh. Absolute chicken walk.

That's not right. It was in production for yeeears! It's not like the Silent Hill storyline was just tacked on at the last minute, you know.

She's completly right. It really gets annoying that so many people think it was really rushed. However SH3 did have better graphics than SH4. That's why I always use SH3 for sigs.

Well it kinda was, after all. The game wasn't even meant to be a SH game in concept, so even though they did spend a lot of time on it, it was still pretty strained no matter how much time they spent on it. Besides, all games take years to develop, they just could have spent much more time on the details (I mean, burping nurses and panther dogs? come on, someone just got lazy).

i think SH4's graphics are the same as SH3, however, since SH4's lighting is much less dark than SH3, the flaws are easier to spot. perhaps the opinion of them is further tarnished by SH4's notoriously poor (in comparison to the other silent hill titles) gameplay.
no longer active. thanks for the memories.
