Just to wake-up this SH3 section!
Silent Hill 3 was probably the greatest version of the game for lots of melee-combat fun.
I had finally got Heather into the "God of Thunder" costume and found the katana and then I proceeded to help her become very much like a crafty little Silent Hill Ninja as we slipped through the levels and demons of SH3, almost always in the dark with the flashlight off, most of the time.
BTW, I am sending Yahoo folks, from several different types of games, to our world of Silent Hill from my SHF group, below. (So, what plans are there for the Silent Hill community, in general, to start a much more active SH modification community?) Because I can only push Silent Hill oriented ideas and maps, etc, at those other game groups, for only so long, you know.

Of course, I'll have to agree.Folterung wrote:sh3 was too focused on being scary with over the top blood and many rather "unsettling" images. i still liked the game, but the story from silent hill 2 beats everything
SH3 was Konami trying to quickly push our very mature "Silent Hill" story into the younger game-arcade market with a fairly action-oriented game. While SH2 was busy trying to flesh-out an entire world of possibilities that should have become like a main Silent Hill story engine. (Hell, Rod Serling's teams of Twilight Zone writers would have created a decade or more of Silent Hill adventures from SH2!)
And let's not talk about SH4, it could get UGLY?

sh3 was a good game it just didn't seem to have the deep feel of sh1.Sh3 was about as deep as a puddle of water on a penny.Istill play it and enjoy it,dont get me wrong,I just dont think it was as good as sh1 or 2,but better then 4.

Well, in terms of the actual "Silent Hill story", SH1 + SH3 simply equals that story.
(SH3 was a decent and somewhat personal "finish" for SH1. And not a bad story, if you can kind of ignore a lot of those totally non-story related "fantasy characters" that Konami decided to drop on us.)
And that's what I did with my almost completely melee-oriented "Ninja Heather" gameplay.
(IE: I simply tried to ENJOY another side of their arcade-oriented SH3 game, that's all.)
And the SH2 story-engine was a "promise", of sorts, for a very bright and creative future of Silent Hill chapters and sub-stories.
So, if you can equate that "SH4 chapter" to SH2's creativity and truly enjoy SH4, as a totally unique experience, then BRAVO to your FUN! (And no further SH4 discussions are really needed within a SH3 area, you know.)

And, for me, SH3 having both 2D and 3D game-mechanics was well appreciated.plastique-nouveau wrote:I absolutely love the detail (dirty, rusty, bloody look) of SH3. Kudos to that.
The menu screen was more organized too.
Oh, you could say that the camera's view or the mechanics could be slightly improved, perhaps? But, for a non-arcade game, Konami's SH3 seemed to be coming along, quite nicely. And, like a normal fan and follower of SH, I expected that same attention to detail in their SH4. Oh well.
Maybe I should suggest a new line of SH3 topic for our discussions?
And since you liked those structural graphic-details of SH3, as did I, BTW.
As storyline details, what did all of those SH3 creatures mean to you, during your game?

Silent Hill 3 is the best ever. Period.
Now anyways, many people complain claming that it's too shallow. I rarely see this complaint about silent hill 1, so lets compare the stories.
SH 1: A man goes into Silent Hill for the more or less selfish reason of rescuing his own daughter (it's pretty selfless to risk your life for someone else but he sure seems to care little for the plight of the town) and is used by a woman to aid in the birth of god. In order to save his daughter he is forced to combat the god he helped summon.
SH 3: A girl goes into Silent Hill for the selfish reason of revenge. She is used by a woman to aid in the birth of god. In order to avenge her father she is forced into combat with the god she helped summon.
Silent Hill 1 has no more depth than 3. And 3 has all the other hallmarks of a great story--the main character develops notably from her experiences. She storms into Death City ready to give Claudia hell but by the end of the game she can't even deal what she came to do. The characters were all good (vincent was a little too flat, but even he showed us up in the end) and the story was rich and complete. Not only that but Heather is unwittingly drawn into something larger, and she plays a vital role in the fate of all people. She and Douglas confront the most twisted side of human nature and because of this they can defeat the god. Those of you who've seen Stephen King's It might remember that they beat the monster fairly easily. What made those kids great was that they continued to stand up against It even when Pennywise used all of his power to terrify them, power that drove a weaker a man insane. In the same way god is trying to create a world of darkness and nightmares and Heather and Douglas prove that regular people can stand up and resist their darkest fears.
The love child of this community (sh2) by comparison has some of the most obscenely...well...retarded characters. Angela is a listless whiner, Eddie is simply obnoxious, and I don't get what the hell is with Laura. I think she was put in that game simply to reiterate that none of it was real, and that there was no point to spending 2 hours on decoding a note I found in a toilet. But at least they all have their one cinematic where they truly epitomize the conflict they represent. However there is not one redeeming quality for that bumbling lunatic James. He ambles into Silent Hill, makes goofy faces, sticks his arms into holes, bumps into walls, falls down stairs, and fights like a drunkard. But those are just flaws with the game. What I didn't like about the story was that it had nothing to do with anything. It was a big masochistic guilt trip on James's psyche. His adventure is ultimately pointless, all he did was unearth some hidden guilt and it's highly likely he never entered that town of Silent Hill. I just didn't like the fact that I spent nine hours helping a man survive and fight in a story where the object was punishment and the conclusion was suicide? It seems that in this forum a 'deep' story is just one where the conflict is never resolved and a 'shallow' story is one where characters accomplish things and grow.
And another thing, why the hell did I get nine game overs protecting Maria in that stupid hall just so I could watch her get shanked when I finally did it? Explain that one to me. James is the one who wants punishment by futility, not me!

And that is good part of my initial statement for this message.lovelytourniquet wrote:And we can't forget about the voice acting. SH3 was far superior in English voice acting than SH 1. I also believe that compared to the rest the controls were near perfect. It is so much easier to manuver in that game.
"Silent Hill 3 was probably the greatest version of the game for lots of melee-combat fun."
And since a lot of us bought SH3, we might as well make the best of it.
And I was expecting at least the same quality in the camera and the controls in SH4.
(Then, I found out that SH4 was actually called The Room and written earlier then SH3.)
So, when there is a SH5, I will be probably one of the very last to buy or to, even, RENT it!
(And I have bought all of them, almost blindly, before.)

SH2 had the best story, purely because they went out on a limb and crafted this whole other world from what we knew of Silent Hill. It had a start, a middle and an end that all took place within a couple of hours without feeling rushed or bombarding the player with information and plot twists.
However, it's a shite game to play. Duller than a MySpace profile.
SH3's story didn't seem to fit right and drew closure when there wasn't really closure to be drawn.
SH4 has a marvellous story, but was poorly executed. The game wasn't that fun to play, and this took away from what I believed to be an intriguing story, although not as intricate as that of SH2.

What did all of those SH3 creatures mean to you?
The title says it all, pretty much.
SH1's creatures made a lot of sense because of the actual combatants, who were in control.
And SH2's very haunting creations were totally logical, once you knew the real reasons for the hero's "quest". And, of course, the SH4 ghosts had to be made fairly obvious for Konami's attempt at making OUR "Silent Hill" into more of an "action-oriented" video game, for that market-share. (But most of SH4's main monsters seemed simply un-explained until you found the right Japanese site to gather their reasons for existence. (So, could SH4 be re-titled as "PacMan visits Silent Hill" with all those over-used ghosts, perhaps?)
But, anyway. . .
What about SH3's strangely unique "monsters" and their rather awkward attacks?
And what were their reasons for bothering Heather, so much, anyway?
(I could simply voice my suspicions.)
But then you might say that I'm trying to start another "Heather is HOT" message.
(And was Konami simply using some fairly obvious attacks and symbolics to enhance this?)
