Post subject: For SH4 to be considered good... |

...what would it take? What kind of changes would Team Silent need to make to SH4? When I first played it I definitely did not enjoy it all that much, however after joining this forum and reading into SH4, I went back and played it and have grown to really enjoy and appreciate aspects of it.
So my question is, what do you guys and gals think needs to change to improve the game? Improved monster design, more explanation of the story, maybe scarier worlds?

So do I. Yes, a few things annoy me, such as having to go back to the apartment all the time just to save, and the ghosts annoyed me at first as well, but now I think of them as more of a challenge, making the game a bit more exciting than just killing the enemy and moving on. They make the game a bit harder, and often make me have to run if I can't pin them down.
I don't really like having to go back tot he places a second time, either, but thats not such a big deal. The different worlds are kind of cool in my opinion, especially Water Prison World and Building World. The game is different from the others, which I like, as it is unique. It also has a bunch of little things that ties it to the other games, which I find cool.
I also love the belching nurses. Very funny and entertaining to beat them for that reason. Overall I love this game, as well as the others. Its not my favorite, but not my least favorite either.
The things I could change? More save points rather than just the apartment. I'd also give it a few more worlds to go through instead of repeating the ones it has.

I make Henry not walk like a little boy.
I think the claustrophobic darkness thing was pushed as far as it could go in Silent Hill 3, but Silent Hill 4 probably would be a lot scarier if the otherworlds were traditionally dark. Imagine how creepy the water prison would have been. I didn't find the otherworlds scary at all while playing. Only the apartment ever freaked me out, although I think that was a brilliant psychological effect, giving you a false sense of security and then shattering it.
A UFO ending, and a bigger difference between the Mother & Escape ending, would have been nice too.

Kill everybody who is still bitching about it four years later.

I am playing it thru again since I wanted to beat them all again before V came out. And once again I am wishing for the old inventory screen like in the first 3. Its just more organized and easier to use. Call me a wuss if you want but it was also my sancturaury too. If something too scary was going on our I was being gang banged by monsters I could just pull up the screen and take a breather.

Well, when I first started playing SH4, every little thing annoyed me. But now that i've finished the game, I really like it. It may have been a lot different from the other games, but it had a great story. Plus the final boss battle was probably my favorite out of all the games.
Long story short, I think it's great the way it is.

I'm an evil purist.
Basically, I loved the first three games for many reasons. One of them, aesthetically, was that they were very similar physically. 2 and 3 were almost entirely identical, running on the same engine as they did.
A lot of people hated the original trilogy's tank-control scheme. I am not among that group; I much prefer it to the 2D scheme that eventually replaced it. 2 and 3 offered players a choice between the two. 4 and Origins took that away and forced the 2D on us without coming even close to perfecting its application within the engine they designed. So, while playing, I often find Travis and Henry doing things I don't want them doing, going places I don't want them going, and it wrecks the experience for me. If anything, Origins is even worse than SH4 in that regard. That's to add the artificial limitations imposed, be it a limited inventory or weapons that are far more fragile than you would realistically expect (I know a plank of wood might not last but a few blows, but a god damn meathook or tire iron should last freaking forever).
Basically, I liked the first three games because I play Silent Hill primarily for the story and atmosphere, focusing on gameplay on repeat playthroughs. Silent Hill 4 and Origins made changes to the formulae that made enjoyment of the story subordinate to the gameplay itself, and while some people might like that idea, in both games these changes were flawed, and served to exist as an unwelcome distraction from the overall experience. I've replayed the first three games at least a dozen times each (the second one I completed at least fifty times). But Silent Hill 4 I played through I think twice or three times (never got the Mother ending), and Origins remains unfinished, two months after having bought it.

It's already perfected. People miss things like UFO ending, flashlight and so on, but each one of these "missings" had a reason to be excluded in the final product.

I'm not talking about little details. I'm talking about the gameplay engine itself, specifically the control scheme.

It is good.
Maybe a better inventor system.

I might get flamed for this, but I think the only way to make SH4 better is to not play it at all. It's a horrible game with a stupid escort mission, freaking annoying monsters, nothing even REMOTELY related to the real SH, and a storyline that makes you go "I spent all these hours playing for *THAT*?!" The only thing SH4 needs is to be wiped from the SH list, IMHO

I could say the same of Silent Hill 2...
