Easy Maria Ending?

Post by NightFlutter »

I've always heard of so many conditions it takes to get the Maria ending and countless people complaining that they couldn't get it...

Well, I just played through the game another time and ignored every little thing, including Maria. I didn't read the journal on the roof, I didn't listen to the headphones, I didn't look at Angela's knife, I didn't check on Maria, I didn't listen to the conversation in the hallway, and I didn't get the rebirth items. I more or less sped through it for my own amusement (trying to get extra riddle mode cuz I hadn't beat it on "beginner" action difficulty or "easy" riddle difficulty at that point)...

As soon as I arrived at the final boss, Mary was sitting on the bed as opposed to leaning on the windowsill and I knew I got that ending. After the battle, sure enough.

Anyone else run into this before?

So basically, if you go through the g ame ignoring all the extras, you should get it. Showing any interest in anything will show that you care about Mary in some respect and automatically forefeit the Maria ending. So basically, speed-running = Maria.

I've noticed a speed run = Maria ending, too. In the guidebook it says that's the ending you're more than likely to receive on your first play through - which is odd since I got Leave the first time I played SH2. :P But yeah, I've noticed it.. and I thought it was interesting. I guess if you go the easy route you're rewarded with the same bitter cycle again.

And for anyone that's having trouble getting the ending (I did, for a while) spend as much time as humanly possible hanging around Maria before you go to Brookhaven. Run all the way down the stretch of Nathan Avenue (I think that's it's name...) to find the dead guy and the map. Then run all the way back. Explore parts of the town if you want to, but make sure you do it before you go to Pete's Bowl-O-Rama, because by then Maria's focus is finding Laura. Once you're in the hospital with her, before you leave her on the third floor, go to every possible place in the hospital you can with her. Take her down to the first floor, once you figure out the elevator (I know it can be done, I just can't remember how). Continously check on her, heck even go out of your way to make sure she's alright, and .. well.. Don't give a hoot about Mary. (Don't examine the letter or the photograph, don't listen to the conversation in the hallway).

.. /tangent.
I'm not dead yet, dammit.

Same here, it took me two tries(?) to get the Maria ending.

Yeah, my first was that ending also. It's almost like default.

The first ending I got was "In the Water". I wonder why I got that when all of you got "Leave"?

If you have the greatest hits version or Xbox version then simply play Born from a wish and you'll automatically get the Maria ending.

I actually played the game without regard of what to do the first five runs (except for rebirth of cource), but I got the endings one after another, starting with Leave, ending with Rebirth. Never got a hard time getting any of the endings...

If you think about it a speed run will most probably get you Maria because:

-You won't check Mary's letter... so that's by by for Leave
-You won't check Angela's Knife... by by In Water
-No extra items... by by UFO, Rebirth or Dog

Even if you shoot her, ignore her, have PH have it's way with her and go back to Nathen avenue when she talks about Laura running of... if you didn't touch any of the ''ending items'' the game will choose the Maria ending beacuse no matter how you play you always fulfill the ''stay close to Maria'' requirement. Even if you run all the time with her laging behind you, the game probably still counts her as beaing neer to some extent... at the end the game probably weighs your doings... and if you did nothing, Maria will probably be ''heaviest'' =P

Though I think it's pretty wierd for someone to get ''Maria'' first time through... as you usualy check everything and don't just run of... at least... I don't think most people do...

I got the Leave ending the first time too, cuz I paid attention to everything cuz I wanted to figure out as much as possible without using a guide. I got the Maria one from speed-running and got "In Water" cuz I forgot to read the note on the roof, but did everything else that would usually get you "Leave".

My main concern was to only get Leave and the secret endings, but in order to get Extra Hard riddles, I had to play the game 2 more times and unconciously got the other endings. So now I have everything the game has to offer except the deadly Hyper Spray. (I only have the stunning one)

I got Leave the first time, and I've never gotten the Maria ending. I got In Water, and Rebirth. But then again, I never whored myself to Maria... and I didn't rush through the game.

I got Leave the first playthrough and have rarely gotten it since, basically due to the speed at which I frequently play it. (I haven't had a "relaxing" run through that game in ageees.) I've gotten Maria my last five times- like Rip said, you're not gunning for anything else, so the game defaults to it. Maria was the last of the three basic endings that I got- now I get it literally without trying.

This seems to make sense, but some how I got In The Water my first play through. I seem to remember thinking I could use Angela's knife as a weapon and examining it a few times, so I attribute it to that, but it was a few years back so I can't be sure.

If you stay at low health throughout the game you'll probably end up with In Water regardless of whether you touch the knife or not. This is the ending I usually get when I play a speed run on Hard.

Everytime I speed through the game I get the "Leave" Ending.
Sometimes I get the "In Water" Ending.

If you're paying attention to the diary on the roof or anything that makes reference to Mary, then that will happen.

I too received the "In Water" ending on my very first play through. To get the "Maria" ending I followed some simple suggestions in an FAQ as well as spening tons of time with her in the hospital room were she was in bed. I just put the controller down and walked away for a while. My time suffered but I did get the ending. :)

Here's how I got all the conditional endings:

LEAVE: Read the journal on the roof, listened to the headphones and the voices in the hallway.

IN WATER: Ditto except I forgot to read the journal on the roof.

MARIA: Didn't do anything above. Raced to the end and only did what I had to do to win...and thats it. No extra little details or documents.

So I guess all those crazy conditions don't mean anything after all.

Does this support that the Maris ending is the true ending?
Douglas: Where are you going?
Heather: I’m taking the subway home.
Douglas: What should I do?
Heather: Hell if I know.
