Quick question,
Does anyone know where can I find the version of Promise used in the game? I swear it's slightly different to the one found on the OST, more gentle. The version used in game is easily one of my favourite Akira tracks.

Well there's 'Promise' and then there's 'Promise Reprise'
So the one you are looking for is either one of those two.

No, they're both on the official OST. The song used at the beginning of the game sounds a lot like Promise, but with a gentler melody and less guitar.

For anyone else who's interested, I did a little more searching after I posted that question and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Lis6LnVbk
If you listen closely there is a difference.

Silent Hill - Silent Hill
Silent Hill 2 - Betrayal
Silent Hill 3 - I Want Love (Studio Mix)
Silent Hill 4 - Are you kidding? Room of Angel hands down. The best of all Silent Hill tracks ever.
Silent Hill Origin - Shot Down in Flame
Silent Hill Homecoming - One More Soul to the Call
Silent Hill Shattered Memories - Acceptance

Well, basically I love all the tracks with McGlynn's vocal. But these are definitely my favorites for every title.

SH: Opening Theme

SH2: Theme of Laura (used to be Music Box)

SH3: (just currently) Never Forgive Me, Never Forget Me (That's an odd choice, my old favorites are 'Breeze- in Monochrome Night', 'A Stray Child', and Please love me... once more', and it'll probably become one of those again, these past couple months track no. 14 has really just struck a cord with me)

SH4: Waverer (used to be 'Room of Angel' and 'Traversing the Portals of Reality')

SHOrigins: The Healer

Dunno yet about the other two games.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; The Silent Hill soundtracks are kind of like hotdogs. They sort of lose their appeal once you find out how they're made. For the longest time, I considered the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack to be an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end. It had a certain sound and feel that I've never "experienced" before. Much of that sound and feel comes from those warm, ambient synth pads. It was perfect... For years, I had envisioned Yamaoka in a studio somewhere, slaving over an old school, vintage Roland synth, coming up with those incredible sounds. But, as it turns out, he didn't. It's all just... samples. Not even edited. He just threw them into a sampler and hit a couple notes. Eric Persing (the man responsible for the Spectrasonic sample libraries) should have been credited on almost every Silent Hill OST, as he created most of the damn music!

I still have a little respect for Yamaoka, but he is not near the genius that I once thought he was. I still love the Silent Hill 2 OST, but I consider it an Eric Persing album, with arrangements by Akira Yamaoka, because that's exactly what it is.

I've come to the same conclusion over the last couple yr.s I watch a lot of History channel and they were samples over and over during reenactments or demonstrations. At first it was "Wait! I know that. That is from (such and such OST). That is weird."

Now, it is the opposite. I listen to the soundtracks, 2-4 mostly, and all I hear is the different layers of sampling that is the Silent Hill music, which has cause a great demystification for me. I am no longer enchanted, simply sustained. That is one of the biggest reason, if not the number one reason, I am hopeful and throughly excited for the new composer to show us his stuff.

A Silent Hill fan-fiction I plan to turn into a comic and I'm keen to get feedback so I can improve the story before then.
