To be honest I'm tired of this game

Post by 911 »

Hello !
It's been three days I'm playing this game and this is enough. I'm f-ing tired of this game. Like almost angry. I can't with those stupid ideas of gameplay. Like only ten items in your pocket, can't open doors if Elein is not next to you, come back to the apartment to save your game, visit again places you already saw with nothing to discover...

Like for exemple, I was right before the Second journey in the Forest, you know, in Metro part 2. And
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
there was this blond long haired guy that was trying to kill me with a gun, and the girl that follows Henry just stands up around and I wasn't able to open the door to escape this mad guy because she didn't want to move her ugly ass. "I can't let her alone" duh you're dying man just open the door
This just makes me stop playing for tonight. Is it worthy to continue the game or is there a lot of this kind of unbearable things until the end of the game ? Because I just can't at this kind of things.

It is sad because the game is pretty good without this. When we play Henry alone it's nice.

I'll be honest: I don't really like The Room.

Far as I'm concerned, it's just a dime-a-dozen Japanese ghost story (He was stuck to the bottom of the lid!!) that tosses all of the gameplay advancement that had culminated in SH3 out the window. I don't understand why they went that (control/gameplay) route, and it's the biggest reason why the apocryphal theory that The Room was originally an independent game gained so much traction in the Western community.

Amusingly (and irksomely), nostalgia has increased since game development moved over the ocean. Since The Room was Japanese, it therefore got promoted to the "good ol' days." It was, to say the least, controversial back in 2004 and '05. That's the way I see it, of course, and there are always exceptions (like people who always did like it, for one reason or another).

Naturally, my first reaction is: "If you feel like you're wasting your time, you probably are."

That said, you do seem somewhat invested in the outcome of The Room, so lemme see if I can offer any advice...

Back when I was playing (I haven't really replayed it since, oh, '06 at the latest), I remember finding a "safe" room and leaving Eileen in there as I ran around and cleared out the monsters. These rooms typically were small and only had items in them (you can leave her somewhere where you cleared out the monsters, but there's always a chance they might respawn and damage her while you're away).

Eileen accumulates damage based, unless I'm mistaken, on the "danger level" of a room and how much time you leave her in there. So leave her someplace safe and work fast so she accumulates as little as possible. Manage your save files in such a way that, if the results aren't to your liking (she ends up looking like a rotten apple), you can reload and try again.

Also, a very important note, and I'll put it in spoiler tags even though it has nothing to do with the story:
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
Eileen can't die. She'll look terrible, but she cannot die until you trigger a certain story event. How much damage she takes is significant, but she won't just keel over in the middle of the forest.
That should relieve some of the stress you're under.

Also, there are four "special" ghosts and four Swords of Obedience. Use that to your advantage. Follow this, and your only worry will be Mr. Cobain, himself. :)

Careful, though: He'll still try to eat your cancer.

Do you have her equipped with a weapon? If you do she'll tend to fight anything that is near her rather than follow you. If you go up to her and un-equip it any time you're trying to run away then you should have more success.

Silent Hill 4 is odd. It started off being very underrated, then once the fanbase split into Team Silent fans and Silent Hill fans, the former especially began to overrate it, terribly, as if to compensate.

It's not a good game. It isn't even really that great a story, so I think the more time passes. I hated how the majority of the story was revealed through notes, telling rather than showing almost every event which was important to the story. Having a player character with little interest in events other than surviving them just does not make for a very compelling game. I don't even really care about Walter and his problems, though a lot of that has to do with the fact that this was the period in Silent Hill's lifespan where the writers seemed to be trying to one-up each other in trying to cram the stupid cult into everything and turning it from a creepy and mysterious little group of occult into a sloppy melange of spooky and violent world religions.

It's a bad video game because it's flawed and because it's boring to play and because I just didn't really care about the characters or their problems.

Thank you for your answers. I really feel like Ryantologie about the game. They should have take more time to make it. The story is so boring, Walter has nothing to do with the story, I can't with the ghost. I'm done. I didn't knew it wasn't meant to be a Silent Hill at the first place. And now I see exactly why. It has nothing of a Silent Hill game. It feels like they just put the name Silent Hill on the cover, the wrote a line with the name of Alessa, put a Rabbit plush here and there and that's all...

Thank you postcode and Kenji for your help about the game. I will try to get back what I gave to her (a pink bag or something) I hope it will work. I'll try to play again next week. Thank you Kenji for the revelation about Eileen
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
when the trigger will allow the game to kill her, I'll let it kill her without regrets. I just can't with this character.
I hope I finish it soon. Feels like I've been fooled by Konami with The Room. I can see nothing that I liked about the previous games.

Go finish the game, seriously.

And one of the best weapons for Eileen is the chain. Try to find it.

Hmm, I still think this game is great. And I find it's story 10x better than Homecoming's and Origins'.

Hey, if game development had stayed in Japan, in the direction The Room was going, we might've seen the story evolve from the Coin Locker Baby (seriously, that's what The Room's story is -- 911, I suggest you don't look this story up until you finish the game) to innovative, new Japanese ghost stories, like the Stripper Lady.

Seriously, though, I have no problem with people liking this game. I just don't, for all the reasons stated above.

Disclaimer: The Stripper Lady is not actually a Japanese ghost story, outside the world of Academy City. It does, however, share all the ridiculous features of Japanese ghost stories, all of which require generous amounts of groupthink and/or very willing participation to actually work.

Meh...i've always loved SH4..it just felt so unique and different from past games yet it still felt like a SH game. the concept of being locked up in your room was new and refreshing at the time and even to this day it's still a great looking game.

I didn't mind the story being told mainly thru notes because after you read them the game would transistion smoothly into the area or section that you had to traverse...could henry and a few of the side characters use a bit more development?...sure, but this story was mainly about Walter and what he was trying to accomplish.

The 2nd half of the game really felt like you was going deeper into the madness...

I remember The Room being my first completed title and at the time, while still playing SH2 and SH3, I remember thinking how The Room was so cool and how the other two (I underline the words at the time) were actually poor and even sucked a lot in comparison with the oh so astonishing Room. The funny thing is that at the time I hadn't even started grasping the concept of story, so I'm not talking about the symbolically stratified dissection business. I had still been basing my preferences on the gameplay, the horror, the graphics and simple playability. And nevertheless, I had still found The Room an amazing title, which is ironic now when I see everybody criticizing its poor playability (the controls and gameplay).

Er, that's not actually true. Kenji brought it up because it was a rumor floating around the internet because people didn't want to accept the game at first.

Yeah, if it wasn't meant to be a Silent Hill game then the decision was made way early on during the development process. People make it seem like they made a last-minute decision and tacked on "Silent Hill" at the end to cash in on the franchise, when that's not what happened at all.

And for all the reasons to dislike the game, that has to be the most fucking stupid.

Oh, okay ! So confusing ! Haha ! But it wasn't one of the reasons I don't like the game. I didn't play it again since I have made that thread. I will give it a chance for sure but not now. I am playing Downpour and I think it's way better and closer to what I liked in SH 1-3.

Please don't take my statement as me thinking you did, just a comment on the irrational behavior of quite a few fans over the years.

I liked the game it's my least played SH title. The gameplay really does hold it back, and the story feels incomplete like the first title did.
I think it's pretty understandable if you just don't like the game. It is a bit of a chore.

Wackos.

Storywise, SH4 is superior to both SH2 and SH3. If these games were books without "Silent Hill" on the cover, The Room would definitely reach much further up on sales lists. I really consider the original game together with The Room to be the best original stories of the series. They're not follow-ups or imitations, they are stand-alones.

SH fan boys have always been bashing on SH4 because it changed a few things. Yeah sure, it left out the flashlight and radio. That's basically what made people go nuts. Out of all the reasons people hate this game, the two reasons that I see people write most often is this one, tied in with the false rumour "SH4 was never supposed to a SH game in the first place". The game has sunspots just like every other SH game, but calling it straight out BAD is an obsolescent and ridiculous statement belonging to a 2005 SH forum discussion.

And Ryan, gosh, you're just being overly negative in your first post. Just like you blame people for overly justifying the game, you're doing the exact same thing just the other way around.

Personally, I think I would feel extremely comfortable calling SH4 a "bad" game. And I like it.

Just because there are things about it that I feel are deeply flawed and debilitating aspects of the gameplay and the design doesn't mean I can't still enjoy it. Deadly Premonition is in my top three favorite games this generation, but it has to be one of the most profoundly flawed games of the past decade. SH4 certainly has a unique narrative to it in the realm of games, and that is the aspect I am quite fond of in this title. However, the horrendous first person apartment controls, the menu system, the way hauntings are dealt with, the movement controls, the charge attacks, backtracking, escorting Eileen, and so much more all fall squarely into the "bad" column for me.

the room was my first silent hill experience. As such, and considering I didn't play it again for years, it's obvious i'm biased. But I like this game. Granted, the second half is really annoying, and Henry is totally bland. But it has also some great ideas, an interesting story, and an incredible atmosphere.

I tried to play it again but I didn't succeed. I really don't like this dumb girl following Henry. I was pretty calm and I really enjoyed replaying this game where I left it but this girl messed up everything in 5 seconds. It's not only for SH4, I don't really like games with second character because it's always badly programming.
For Silent Hill 2 (with Maria) it really was okay because she's just following and for short times.

So as I was unable to finish the game my self, I watch the end of the game on internet and it was nice. The story is really nice but not my favorite silent hill.

I hope someday I'll finish it myself.
