Jim Sterling praises Revelation as an unintentional comedy

Post by Droo »

Jim Sterling recently did a Movie Defence Force on SH:R praising it as a "so awful it's awesome" type of film: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/ ... ily-Comedy

Thoughts? Personally, I'm enough of a shameless fanboy that I fail to find any comedic value in such a disaster as this. Watching this in theatres made me embarrassed to be a SH fan even more than the first movie did.

I enjoyed it in a "so bad it's good sense", but then I'm not the biggest fan of SH3 to begin with.

In some ways I enjoyed it more than the first for how stupid it can get.

I think the video man forced it into that category. I save that meme for movies with B grade actors trying their best but unable to deliver. The SBIG usually has formulaic stories filled with clichéd lines. SHR had a dream team cast who obviously phoned it in. The story at least didn't follow what I watch on Chiller every weekend.

I didn't find it amusing, no. Its suckiness just made me wince.

I enjoyed a few things, particularly the little nods/easter eggs for SH fans, but I'd have to watch it again to remember if I liked much more than that.

I enjoyed the first movie a LOT more, even if I didn't really enjoy the portrayal of the cult and that many of them being in it.

I hated it less than I might have expected. I did go in with very low expectations though having seen the reaction on here. I found the early part pretty cringe-inducing but I kind of got into it a bit more after a while.

Another reason I can't put it in the SBIG is it had the one good scene with the nurses at the asylum. That meant it wasn't a foregone conclusion, MJB was capable of delivering.

The one where Heather is making as much noise as possible while poor Vincent is tied to the gurney shhing her? The one that felt like it was pulled directly out of a spoof?

Noise? I remember it as the only scene without blarfing sound effects.

This one, yeah?

She sneaks up and then starts shouting about her dad!

Different senses of humour maybe, but it cracks me up every time.

I have it as my avatar because I think it is ridiculous. I'm more aghast at it than amused.

I absolutely adore Sterling. I look forward to Jimquisition every week, I follow them on Twitter, I listen to their podcast, all that. I usually agree with their feelings on the video game industry and the various fanbases and communities on the internet that surround it. Especially in the past year or two as even they admit they have grown a lot as a person in the past few years.

I generally don't agree with her actual taste in media, though. I like games she hates and I hate games she likes. She loved the first Silent Hill movie and I hated it and I just really don't agree that Revelation can be seen as an unintentional comedy. It lacks pretty much all of the things that makes that work. Sure, it's easy to laugh at the movie for being so bad. Poptart Jump Scare is literally hilarious, but actually watching the movie brings me no pleasure. The best unintentional comedies are the ones you can enjoy watching and laughing at. Revelations only has a few moments that are funny in hindsight, actually watching the movie just left me bored, annoyed, and sad. It's also far too forgettable to remain in my mind long enough for me to consider it being great at anything.

Edited in 2023 to reflect Stephanie Sterling's pronouns (she/they).
(Also, reading this post, I forgot how much I used to follow their work. I stopped following them maybe a year or so after this post, though I still respect them)

I just replace lines for Ned Stark and Jon Snow in my head when I watch it.

I'm kidding, I never watch it.
