It's taken a little while - this chat was completed a little while before Christmas! - but my interview with Tomm Hulett about harassment is now up at Eurogamer. :)

Excellent article. I always did like the guy and thought his treatment was some hellacious bullshit.

Never bite the hand that feeds ya. Nobody wanted Silent Hill to die. Games are art, too.

The Grate Debate channel did some videos setting the record straight about Tom Heulett.

It's important stuff for the community to recognize, and if necessary make amends for if they were involved in any harassment.

Only thing I'd take issue with in the video is the idea that they made it look like Guy Cihi was contradicting himself, but that's not the case.

Yes, Guy was suing Konami for money, but it's also not a contradiction when he said that the money was 'not the point' - because his point was more about the general principle of paying voice actors for their work. According to Cihi, it's not that he needed the money, it was more about a principled stand.

Really great article, Vixx.

I've always liked Tomm and what he had to say about the series. His treatment was one of many stepping stones to me becoming jaded at the entire ideas of internet communities about one particular piece of media. No offense intended to anyone here, this place was always cool, but I honestly can't think of a single "fanbase" for something that didn't eventually become intensely toxic.

I remember, wow probably seven years ago now, when Tomm himself was briefly on this forum, I sent him a PM expressing my frustration at what he was dealing with, my appreciation for his work on the series, and trying in general to just send him some really positive vibes. He seemed genuinely pleased by it, and we exchanged a few messages back and forth. I think at the time he also said he'd make a new Book of Memories character to play with me when I got a Vita. Doubt he remembers those messages now, since they were surrounded by hundreds of far more negative ones, but in the years that followed when people would still always drag his name through the mud and claimed he killed the series, I couldn't help but think back to them and remember how nice and down to earth he seemed.

Well, regardless, I wish him the best.

There's no "I" in team. It's wrong of them to say that X person caused the series' overall decline.

Thanks all. :)

Yeah, TGD videos are incredibly good, with enviable production value, too! I know it seems suspicious that these pieces came out so close together - I was accused of plagiarism on Twitter - but I spoke to Tomm before TGD did; it's just that the feature stalled, I forgot about it, and then it was TGD that reminded me my interview was still in limbo. Tomm verified it all on Twitter.

People actually thought you plagiarized the idea of interviewing the most notable figure the series has had in the past fifteen years to talk about why he left it? That's incredibly silly.

Also, the irony of a bunch of internet people giving you shit over their own incorrect assumptions over someone's work when said work is an article in which you address how bad it is for random internet people to do exactly that should not be ignored. Some people really have no sense of self-awareness, huh?

I just hope the series returns in a meaningful way.
