If I play this first, will it ruin the series?
Hi all, I'm relatively new to the Silent Hill universe, and while I've played a little of all four games, I have yet to beat one.
Today I picked up SH3 from a store because it was only 5 bucks, and I'm interested in getting more involved with the series. My question is this, if I beat this game, will it spoil the rest of series (1/2), or is it disconnected from those games?
Based on the first couple hours of gameplay, it looked to me like there was no relation, but in a game like SH, looks can be deceiving.

You can play SH2 and The Room without playing SH1 or 3. However, the story of SH3 is much more simplistic than the others, so playing this first and then playing the more complicated SH1, 2, and The Room might be a bit jarring.
SH3 will have infinitely more emotional impact for those who have played SH1.

I can see it with eyes closed

Dead as far as the mind goes
Fear that comes from my head
Lives in the mirror"

I would recommend playing SH1 before SH3 though, because you'll get the emotional twist and all that crap playing in that order.

Hey, now, that's become classic material! The game itself is still fantastic.BurningOnTheInside wrote:Yeah, I'd actually recommend playing two first, the best representation of the series. The awful acting in one may turn some people off.HunterX wrote:I never played 1 and liked 3, true though, playing 1 helps 3 make more sense...2's the best anyways play that
I'm not dead yet, dammit.
okay,so silent hill 2 is probably the definitive game of the series..but Ive allways thourght sh3 was a little scarier....its allmost like you're being mentally totured during some parts of it..the subway section is just terryfying, its like everytime you go down the stairs to another platform you're descending further into hell..the whole game is just the weirdest and most visceral of the series..

Although I do think that part 4 is a good game for those new to the series to start out on even though its storyline is not as strong as parts 1/3 and 2.
Silent Hill 3 is faaaaaaar better if one has played the original FIRST.
I consider SH3 a great game in and of itself but it really is the concluding chapter to the brilliant original IMO.
The storyline ties directly into the first game in a way that it looses much of its impact if played without experiencing the original game first hand.
Of course the fact is that many "younglings" have a problem with the early generation 3-D graphics of the PSX/PSone BUT IMO the graphical limitations of the first Playstation is one of the factors that helped create the "feel" of the Silent Hill series (thick fog, limited point of view etc) much like Team Silent Hill has stated on more than a few occasions.

You've missed out on a lot of story then.

Doesn't have anything to do with being new; it has to do with the simple fact that the story of Silent Hill 4: The Room far surpasses the first & third--it's just a matter of how involved you want to be.
