Pointless Charaters in Your Opinions

Post by Anonymous »

edit by amphreded: please discuss about ANY characters you think are pointless in the movie.

The only thing that marred an otherwise excellent movie was the completely pointless inclusion of Christopher Da Silva (Sean Bean). I was glad to read that the original script had only female characters and that it was the studio that insisted on the addition of some men. I think the movie would have been stronger without him.

(Update) Simply because I keep getting responses to something I've already retracted, I repeat myself here:

Excellent point! You're absolutely right. Thanks for that insight.

Yeah, his side-plot was the weak link of the movie, i think. They spend so much time trying to get us sucked in to believing the fog world is real, and then they zip us out to play around with a fairly pointless sideplot.

Well...

On the one hand I agree. The fact that he never seemed to get anywhere or accomplish much was a bit frustrating.

However I didn't mind having him in the film. He did help to highlight the differences between the otherworld and the normal world. And also the weird connection (the way he could sense Rose, the phone calls etc.)

Plus, he was someone we could see a bit more of the whole adoption history/alessa's twin thing from. As well as general history about the town. If you've already played the game you'd know all that stuff. But if you're a newbie he was probably pretty useful for that.

And I don't think the end of the film would have had the same emotional impact if we hadn't been keeping up with his character throughout.

Plus, y'know, his bits were good for bathroom breaks....erm, I mean tension relievers inbetween all the intense scary stuff.

I completely agree.

i agree, he was necessary. that helped them show the differences between normal sh and the otherside. when he could sense her at the school, i was like "wow, that sucks...". he could sense her and felt her, but couldn't get to her. it also helped the plot along by him breaking into the archives and stealing the police records, finding the picture of alessa, going to the orphanage, his interrogation by gucci, that was completely necessary.

and now that i think about it, remember how mary(?) seemed to try to communicate to james through the radio in sh2, but it was always really staticy and he couldn't hear her? basically the same thing happens in the movie, when she calls him at the end, he knows its her but he can't hear her, i guess b/c she's still in the otherworld or something. of course, this furthers my point when we see their house is all grayish and foggy, but on chris' side it appears bright and sunny. breaks my heart really :(

How can he be pointless? He is her husband. He is the link the outside world. Plus without him, we wouldn't have known who the guys was that held/rescued Alessa. Her husband develops the plot in the real world; and like said by jthomp1286, she contacted him with the cell phone and it further tied her to him. In the end, it was sad and it was touching. Pointless? Hardly.

I definately agree, he also was one of the better acted parts. Yes, we definately "need" to get rid of that from a movie.

See, I think all the plot exposition could have been done without the addition of a putative husband. However, for the sheer impact of their insurmountable separation at the end, the husband device can't be beaten.

Exactly. It gave us a perspective from the outside world that we really never received from the other games. Though this is not a bad thing, it presents an interesting twist to the way you perceive it. I feel like, in SH1 if the military came like Kaufmann claimed they would, they may have experienced what Chris and Gucci did, an abondoned, foggy town, no demons, no people, no nothing... then they would have left wondering why they came in the first place.

That's as may be, but I wasn't talking about Sean Bean. It was Chistopher I was picking fault with. No matter how well portrayed, an unnecessary addition to the plot just makes it cumbersome. That's all I was saying.

That said, I have retracted my statement, for the excellent reason that the entire impact of the final twist at the end is derived from his seperation from his wife. If we had to endure the jarring intermissions to get to that bombshell, so be it.

I find myself both agreeing with his prescence being fairly dis-conected with the main plot, but I also agree that the movie would have flopped without him.

It takes the main gist of the game (people stuck in town, oh noes) and adds another level of depression to it.
If you think about it, all he wanted to do was get his wife and daughter back; and in the end when
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
they are so close together but end up being as far apart as two people can get
that adds a whole new level of horror to the movie.
Think of yourself searching for someone, and the entire time they were right next to you; but you couldn't acknowledge each other.
It'sa mind-fuck of desperation.
I liked it.
It added a sense of 'something more than just monsters that are scary'.

Bravo, I couldn't agree more.

I hate to sound d-bag'ish, but Pyramid Head was fairly pointless.
Like, he was just Fan-service.
Also, Anna; she just served to be
PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER_SHOW PRIME_BBCODE_SPOILER:
ripped to shreds by Pyramid Head for effect
So.
The Red Nurse was, but Gans said that he wanted to include much more of her in the hopefully coming sequel.

I think, like the rest of you, Chris was a pretty pointless character. I hated the swtiching between.

And also Lisa, there was no point of including her! Why do it?
