Hi,

Does any one know anything about the fileformats that Silent Hill 2 uses?
Sh2 is my favourie game and I would like to mod it.

- Jaap

P.S. I am examining the some of the mdl files myself to + I got some drawcall data I can rely on but still help is welcome ;)

Mod it?
Dude, to mod a game you would have to first find some way to decompile it. Then one would have to find a way to convert that massive heap of binary into a system of distinguishable files. Once that is done, you would have to find programs capable of editing SH2's data (which was probably created using tools made specifically for the job by Konami, thus being impossible to aquire). Accomplishing this task, you would then have to edit a huge array of data identified by Japanese foot notes, save these changes in a way that wouldn't throw off the disk's data allocation table (of sorts), and recompile it.
If you know anything I don't (like how you plan to accomplish any of these steps), then please share your information. I'll be glad to help if you have something plausible. Until then, best of luck buddy......

I have a rar file full of tools to mod & look at game files from SH2-4. The videos are in bink format on SH2 which you can view and edit with Rad Video Tools (free). You can access audio thru the SH audio tool and also with Psound which lets you extract the audio as wave. One of the SH tools lets you view/extract textures! I don't know how to access the 3D models or map/level files. One way to mod it would be thru what Multi Theft Auto have done with GTA 3-San Andreas. They modded it thru memory hacks & scripts etc.

Psound might find audio on console discs/ROMS but the other files only work on pc versions. Psound can also find all the audio to Silent Hill 1. You can find the texture files to Silent Hill 1 with PSicture.

I did many cool SH2 mods, mainly concerning sound mix and they are fully working in game. If you would like to check what I'm talking about downaload this small mp3 of mine work >

http://files.filefront.com/Mary_Convo_with_Backgrouncrar/;6401177;;/fileinfo.html

its James and Marys convo in long hallway b4 game end. Ive mixed it with SH3 OST track "Never forgive me, Never forgot me" and that scene is lot more touching with it :) btw you can import it yourself into your game, just need mp3 > adx converter(google it) and SHSndExplorer 8)

I have also found something mighty odd while browsing textures of SH2, check this out

its a texture of one of the apartment rooms, I was looking for this face everywhere with camhack too, no succes..yet, maybe you guys have some info

Quite a response.

I am trying to crack the mesh formats myself.
This summer I already tried it but I failed quite hard. Now I have some more information that will increase my chances on getting it right.

Has anyone else ever tried to crack the sh2 file format?
I have intercepted some draw information for the boat model:
Code:
!Capture started!

SetVertexShader(322);

!Capture done!

All though Im not sure how correct this data is.
It might be more than just the boat model. Or some numbers can be in correct.

I just did a clean install, so I have to get visual studio from the msdn site(again). When I get it Ill check into the code some more.[/code]

Take a look at images you post before you hit submit, or at the very least look at your posts when you make them. It's really obnoxious to have a page stretch like that.

Thanks, I guess.

I tried downloading those files but I get a message from rapid share that says "file has been deleted" :( I'd really be interested in extracting the music and or sound. I have Maya so the meshes would be of some REAL interest. (that is if I can open them in Maya)

Unfortunately, The meshes and models and stuff don't open in Maya. I've tried almost every "3D" program known to man.

Never tried Modo. I remember trying 3D Studio Max, MilkShape 3D, trueSpace, etc.

Id try modo, I have only seen Japanese people use it, I think it is even the tool team sh2 used, but Im not sure I cant remember that making of video entirely... But itlooked a lot a like.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find the making of sh2?
