So while making the Jocasta artifact for the SHHeaven Shop, I googled "Jocasta" and came upon this:

Quote:
In Greek mythology, Jocasta, also known as Jocaste or Epikastê was a daughter of Menocenes and Queen consort of Thebes, Greece. She was the wife of Laius. Mother of Oedipus by Laius, and mother of Antigone, Eteocles, Polynices and Ismene by Oedipus. She was also sister of Creon.
-lol, wiki

So basically, Jocasta was the mother and wife of Oedipus.

Could Travis finding the Jocasta artifact in the sanitarium to find his mother mean something? Or is it one of those cases where we're looking at things too deeply again?

I wouldn't say Travis is guilty of an Oedipal Complex, but the search for his mother--and The Truth--is certainly an impetus to his character.

Nice find, too. I'd meant to go and look that up but had forgotten.

In conjunction with the House of Leaves thread about Travis and his mother, it's interesting to note that it is believed by many readers that Johnny Truant and Pelafina Lievre did indeed have a sexual relationship, which makes the reference to House of Leaves in SHO much more obvious.

I don't think so. Missed reference if the case is that Travis could have sexual relationship with his mother, cause, he didn't.

While Travis’ back story is quite similar and could very well be influenced by Danielewski, the parallels between Johnny's story and Travis' end with Pelafina and Helen institutionalized for attacking their children. Johnny did not have a sexual relationship with his mother.

Or what about a molestation? You can take a look at a monster or two and see references to that.

Molestation? I would rather go for Travis hidden sexual thirst, he was probably very lonely man. Besides as his bud sais in the intro. His mother wanted to get rid of him I would reject molestation completely. Also there is another thing that Travis might have had commited a rape before he killed his victim in the motel(hence the presence of Twoback monster there) but it's just a speculation

Because molestation has to do with a positive infatuation with a child...? Normally sexual abuse is, well, apart from horrific abuse, a means of inflicting punishment.

I see no indication of Travis being a murderer OR a rapist.

I don't either.

I was trying to figure out where that came from.

The twoback is from Travis being lonely, from his job and probably having relationship issues.
(when your mother tries to kill you, I think you would have relationship issues as well).

As indicated in the opening sequence and his awkwardness around Lisa.

>I see no indication of Travis being a murderer OR a rapist.
Spoiler for the Bad ending:
In the context of the bad ending, then yes, I believe he's a murderer--probably even a serial killer. The photographs strewn about the motel suggest, to me and others, that Travis took a sort of "revenge"--like Walter did--on others for the misery of his childhood.

There were five deaths there: Death by Shotgun, Snakebite, Overdose, Stabbing, and Broken Heart. The shotgun and stabbing murders are depicted in the Bad ending; snakebite and overdose aren't; broken heart is obvious.
The only one I'd argue is Broken Heart. I'll have to look into this--thanks.

But Travis had nothing to do with that.

about the Travis killing spree
interesting thing is that on all these photos are womens, except for the Broken Heart one ofc. This strengthens the thoery that Travis had prejudice for womens.
And... yet saved a little girl from the fire.

I guess I'll just have to bear this in the back of my mind while playing the game but so far... Not so sure, you guys.

Eddie shot everyone that mocked him, including a dog, yet spared Laura, despite calling him a "gutless fatso."

Well, he was a lunatic. I personally would've killed her and spared the dog but hey--whaddya gonna do...

Point taken. Still: if you're going to label Travis a sexist, and a particular psychotic one, it seems a bit peculiar that he would be so determined to maintain the welfare of little girl he doesn't even know.

prehaps he related to her somewhat being a child in the middle of something she couldnt control.

I didn't think anyone was suggesting Travis was sexist, only that he was more inclined to kill women as judgment for what his mother did to him. Tends to be a common trait among TV/film serial killers.

Just watch any other episode of CSI:. . . .

I'm willing to admit that my use of the word sexism doesn't fit the proper term or definition, but to me that kind of falls into the whole... prejudice against another gender/misogyny territory.

I'd rather skip out on CSI, sadly. Too pompous with bad attempts at one-liners.
