White Claudia?

Poor Alex ... his momma don't seem to like him much. We wonder why in here ...

White Claudia?

Post by Enika »

On the beachside when you first wake up in Silent Hill, you're surrounded by a white flower. Is this White Claudia? The descriptor from the botanical book in Silent Hill 1 says, "Perennial herb found near water. Reaches height of 10 to 15 inches. Oblong leaves, white blossoms."

It's most definately near water, and the height seems like it could be right, but I didn't get a good look at the leaves. I also remember that there's a picture of White Claudia in the book in Silent Hill 1, but for the life of me I just can't find the picture, and my memory of the plant from there seems to be a little different looking. So is this plant indeed White Claudia or is it something else?

I never noticed white flowers near the docks in Homecoming. I'll have to check that out.

Seems appropriate for them to be White Claudia.

Holy shit, I never caught that. That would be really cool if that's true, good work.

I'm *right* near the area, next time I play (probably tomorrow) I can take a picture and put it up.

Edit
Screw it, I took some pictures. Unfortunately, like most digital cameras, my camera doesn't take awesome pictures on screens, but I think they're clear enough.

The place you wake up by is surrounded by rocks with flowers. This is near one of them.

Here's the book from SH1:

Mod edit: Sorry - link removed for safety (malware errors)

I don't see any oblong leaves in those screen shots, but the blossoms are similar. It's possible that Double Helix simply designed them differently, as they did with most aspects of Central Silent Hill.

The blossoms on the screenshots look more like white dandelions than the star-shaped ones in the botanical illustration. And yeah, there's the "oblong leaves" thing.

Could always be a different strain of the plant. That book is how old?

Bloody hell, I saw those plants but I never clicked on. That is very interesting, thanks for telling us that Enika, I'm going to look when I reach there again as I'm on my second run through at the minute.

I noticed those before too, I forgot all about the White Claudia. huh
I think it is them, how ironic is that if it wasn't supposed to be the White Claudia? A white flower, right on the water. Some look to be about 15 inches in height when Alex stands level with them.

It could be the atmosphere in the town that is making it kind of wither away, they are collecting ash over them. That can't be too healthy for them.

Nice observation, Enika!

Wow, what a nice find!

I never even gave notice to that set of flowers. Though, even if I did, I probably wouldn't have thought of them as White Claudia.

Or DH just kinda forgot to keep the original description in mind if they really intended it to be "white claudia"... Weeds don't spontaneously mutate into radically different morphological variants without human intervention... it's their existing physical characteristics that allow them to thrive in their environment after all.

They could've been a strain that had always existed, and just weren't noticeable for lacking hallucinogenic qualities.

Possibly. Seems a bit of a stretch to consider it seriously though... making a tangential reference to something as significant as white claudia and then to deliberately obscure that "reference" in such a contrived manner... :?

Yea. But my I think/type aloud, so if I don't say it, I'll go nuts. Don't take my random ideas too seriously, not even I do a few minutes later.

It probably is intended to be White Claudia, though.

Well...I learned something new. :o
I always thought that White Claudia was a potion or something. Didn't it show up as that in Silent Hill 2?

White Claudia is a white powder, I believe :D Algaophotis (or however it's spelled) is in potion form. However, White Claudia is mentioned to start as a flower.

I started a new game and I'm sorry to say...but I think those flowers are just flowers. I remember seeing some in Shepherd's Glen. Specifically I saw some on the broken road just after the Cemetery and past the parking lot on the left, the road you go down to see Elle, but behind you.

I'm guessing that you're right and the flowers are supposed to be White Claudia - when I played that part in Homecoming I remember saying to myself "what's up with all the flowers?" I never made the connection - great find!
