I think there was a topic like this already, but after searching through the forum I couldn't find it anymore. Maybe it's lost during the hack?
Anyway, I'd like to start this again. Basically, what medias/concepts have influences over the Silent Hill series?

I'm going to edit the list as people input to this thread

Book
Phantoms by Dean Koontz
Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Lost World by Conan Doyle

Arts
Francis Bacon
Hans Bellmer
Joel Peter Witkin

Films
Session 9 by Brad Anderson
Jacob's Ladder by Adrian Lynn
David Lynch's films
David Cronenberg's films
The Shining

Theories
Psychoanalysis (Freudian, Jungian, Lacanian etc.)

Others
Ed Gein and other serial killers/cannibals
Celtic Myths
Asian Myths
Christianity
Kabbalah
Aztec Legends

that's all I could think off right now. Any other influences?

Just one thing: carnivores are people who eat meat. =] Did you mean "cannibals," as in people who eat other humans?

And they based most of the cult's random backgrounds here and there on Aztec, or Aztec-like, things. Xuchilbara/paba, Lobsel Vith, sacrifice, Crimson Ceremony.. and um, I'm sure there's a few more but I can't really remember them right now.

before I started playing Silent Hill I downloaded the intro to SH3. It reminded me a lot of a Tool video (The earlier one's like "sober" and "prison sex"). Seeing Valtiel shake his head, I was like "That looks just like the dude walking around in the sober video." I wonder if Tool’s videos were an influence? They have a lot of that artistic griminess that the silent hill games have.

Specific Lynch movies that have a lot to do with the games are Blue Velvet and Lost Highway.

I just noticed in translated memories that air screamer is taken from Alessa's favourite book: The Lost World by Conan Doyle.

Has anyone read it?

Film

The Ring (SH4)

I mentioned this in another thread.
I'm pretty sure I've heard/read this in an interview.
Cynthias victim form looks like the girl, what with the crawling, and the trailer has a couple of bits that remind me of the 'cursed tape' thing
