So, let's see if i get this right, Damien:
Helen Grady tries to kill her son Travis - before Alessa was even born - in an unknown town, that is not Silent Hill, and says she was told to from behind the mirror. About twelve years later Travis returns to Silent Hill, enters a mirror world that might resemble his mother's one - of which he might know something from his sneak preview in the sanatorium - and is confronted with manifestationen that are based of his subconsciousness, but it's Alessa's nightmare?

In the foggy realm, yes, it's Travis' delusion. That part of Silent Hill has always existed.

Silent Hill is still in charge, trumping even Alessa's power. Alessa can only work in the confines she's limited to at the moment.

We're meeting both Helen and Richard Grady as bosses within the mirror world, not the foggy world. I wonder why they brought that whole background story up with Helen and the mirror world, if it's just Alessa's nightmare in Origins and has nothing to do with Travis.

Helen never actually heard voices from behind the mirror, she was just insane. Alessa probably felt that the mirrors were important to Travis somehow, and used them to manipulate him.

The bosses are there because he's in the foggy realm. Even in the mirror world, he's still under the influence of the foggy realm, thus the manifestations.

How do you know?
The Otherworld always existed in the town, just not in as powerful a form. Maybe some people could see the otherworld in the mirrors.
Anyway, you could be right. If Alessa is indeed in control of who comes and who leaves the Otherwold, than she could have used Travis' association with a "mirror world" to bring him in.

Alessa isn't "in control of who comes and who leaves the otherworld."

That's why I said "If." Some people seem to think so. I, personally, don't.

No, they're both in the mirror world and so is Travis.

The mirror world is not separate from the foggy realm. There's only one alternate dimension until Silent Hill 1.

In horror fiction, nobody is ever just insane. They were always made so by spooky eldritch horrors.

Basically you can be assured that any crazies in a Silent Hill game does not hear voices because they are crazy, but are crazy because they hear voices.

Well, whatever Helen saw in the mirror, it had nothing to do with Silent Hill or the town's powers. She was not in Silent Hill when she saw whatever she saw.

I suppose if you want to believe that there are other supernatural entities independent of Silent Hill, then yes, you could argue that she wasn't insane. But her mirrors are separate from the mirrors in Silent Hill.

They only moved to Silent Hill after she saw her visions, in order to commit her in the Sanitarium. If they had already lived in Silent Hill, Travis and Richard wouldn't have needed to stay in a motel during the debacle.

That's a bit contradicting if I understood you correctly.

Helen was at least admitted in March of 1960, perhaps even earlier as the gas incident happened in November of 1959. So, you'd be saying that they moved to Silent Hill at about that time to commit her to the sanitarium. That would mean they lived in the motel for more than a year. . .

Yes, that's sort of what you do at a motel, you live there. As opposed to a hotel or inn where you just stay for a couple of nights.

When I moved to Ann Arbor, I lived in a motel for about six months while our house was being constructed. It's not uncommon.

I was more expecting in-game evidence than your personal experience, though. I know I never had to live in a motel. Of course, some rooms do hint that the occupants have been living there for a while, so you may be right.

But I don't see any evidence to say that the Grady's lived outside of Silent Hill before committing Helen to the sanitarium. You may think that living in a motel proves that they did, but perhaps Richard just didn't want to be reminded of her much and what happened at the house.

I think it is and it's directly or indirectly connected to the world behind the mirror Helen Grady was talking about. So it's either the same world or one Travis created. Alessa has nothing to do with the mirrors.

If this is true, then why is she in them? And seemingly only in them?

^ Agreed, it's not uncommon at all.

To be fair, she does appear outside the mirrors in the first few minutes of the game.

As for being in the mirrors, Climax really went all out with the heavy-handed depiction of spooky evil psychic ghost girl. Guess they got their Japanese horror crossed.
