Post subject: Has anyone ever been to or heard of Centralia, PA?

I understand the film during production was titled "Silent Hill: Centralia." There's an actual deserted, Silent Hill type town in PA of the same name. What's more that there was an underground coal mine fire that started in the 60's and is still burning to this day. When you visit, you see nothing but a wasteland of deserted homes, burnt trees, burnt houses, burnt grass and smoke rising from the ground. It's quite a scary place to visit, and there are still some people whom live there that aren't the most normal people around..

Anyway, just thought it was interesting that the movie ties in an underground coal fire, and was also titled Centralia during production. If you're a fan of SH and you live in or near PA, definitely take the trip up there and visit. If not, here's some pictures to get an idea:

It definitely would have been a prime place to shoot, but the toxic gases exhibit a threat. I only went for a few hours and I was very sick later on in the night.

Don't you think the working subtitle of "Centralia" isn't a coincidence?

Shooting in the town would be dumb anyhow. I've heard of shooting night for day, but shooting toxic poisoning for toxic poisoning would be pretty extreme.

I actually live about an hour away from Centralia, in Reading. I'm in a band called Slained Child Mourned and we were planning to travel there and take band photos for press kits and posters. I think I'd feel right at home.

They used "Centralia" because they wanted to keep shooting a secret. FYI.

i know how shit like that is.

i live near denver, the location and inspiration for Lakeside Amusement Park in the games.

i've been there, and it holds a weird ambience to it.

Was it actually based off of Lakeside? I've been there tons, and I didn't see any real resemblence in the games...couldn't they just share the same name?

EDIT: Sorry, to clarify: I was wondering if there is actually any evidence that they used Lakeside as a reference, since I've never seen any similarities between it and the Silent Hill Lakeside. The 'couldn't they just share the same name' question was rhetorical, because it's obvious that they could. I suppose I should have been a bit clearer the first time.

Of course they could share the same name. I'm sure they got their inspiration from more than one place.

Answer: Yes
Guess where though?

if you said The Daily Show, yes you are right!
The Daily Show actually once did a segment on Centralia, Penn.
as they interviewed the 30 year old (though clearly 90 years old from his appearance) mayor of the town..
"So why do people like it here?"
"Because it's nice, small, and quiet"

"Hey, look kids! You might even find a dead body!"

"Centralia sucks!!!"
"Yeah, you too buddy"

It was a joke, considering the reputation that name has developed.

it is proving to be quite difficult to find anything on the history of lakeside.

i did find a site once where a guy had traveled there to find the connection with silent hill and the amusement park, had dug up a dark history of sorts on the park, and now i'm having trouble finding it.

once i do, i'll put up a link.

"Lakeside Amusement Park is an amusement park in Lakeside, Colorado near Denver. It was opened in 1908 as a popular amusement resort spearheaded by prominent Denver brewer Adolph Zang, and popularly nicknamed the White City for its glittering original display of over 100,000 lights. Today it is one of the oldest amusement parks in the nation, and the oldest in Colorado in its original location. The park, comprising nearly the entirety of the Town of Lakeside that it was responsible for creating in 1907, features the landmark Tower of Jewels."

- wikipedia

don't know if it's interesting at all, just a little bit of info.

this is really interesting...

old.

broken down, that's basically what it's about.

the rides seem to be falling apart, and it adds to the fear and excitement of the rides.

most people skip it, and go to six flags...

but, i can see why it influenced the park in the games, it has a creepy aura and ambience to it.
