Anyone ever wondered why there was 4th floor in the alternate hospital but not in foggy hospital?
I heard that in japanese, number four is "shi" which also means death in translation.I also head there are no hospitals in Japan with 4th floor in account of there own superstition...
Anyone have any comments?

Not really, since you answered your own questions.. It sounds kind of like the number 13 in America. I've never checked but I think some hotels skip over the floor entirely.

Oh wait. Misread the post.

The fourth floor materializes out of no where as a means to scare you. It is a bit eerie, isn't it? Especially since the floor doesn't really exist.

Think of Italy — which reminds me of California in so many ways — and its chronic inability to form a government. That’s California, with even better food and no parliamentary system.

Yeah, business offices and hotels usually just have a 12th that goes to the 14th floor. And I don't remember, but the scary fourth floor... did it serve any other purpose besides getting you to the third floor or whatever? I haven't played that part in a while.

This is just a "ghost" place to visualize the transition from the foggy reality to the fucked reality, is very similar like the hospital in SH3...

Anyway I love how the doors get closed behind you after you passed through them

Closed!?

I love that when you go down the stairs and try to get back to the forth floor you bump into the concrete wall.

And you're not on it for very long and you can't go in any of the rooms. It's just a more creative way to introduce the Otherworld as opposed to the siren I s'pose.

I loved that part! It is just plain eerie. It's just like in SH3, when you go in the door to the alternate Brook Haven Hospital on the 2nd floor. Just the fact that the door shouldn't have been there scared me.

Always a classic. <3 One of the best ways to make me not scared was to run into walls.

All the little things they add is all based on superstitions that the Japanese believe, the forth floor and mostly the bathrooms, if you watch "The Making of" it explains it all.
Back in the day, many children fell in the toilets, more like wells and died, so there's always been a certain fear of bathrooms.

I remember being so terrified when I heard the doors closing behind me on the fourth floor...I thought something was chasing me but I was too scared to look.

Yes there it, why 4th floor, is because of the world is transforming into other image, (alternative) as you call it, thats why, its not found in a map, but I wonder why would number 4 be a demon's number?! Is it 666? And about SH3 is very different, because there are 6 floors not only 3 but 6.

Raider, in Japan, the number four, "Shi", is the same word for Death. So in Japan it can also be read as "The Death Floor." It's so unlucky that superstitious hospitals don't even have a 4th floor, going right to "five", same with room numbers.

That, and a 4th floor when it's a three-story hospital is creepy in of itself, regardless of the number. It's a floor that's not supposed to exist.
