This may have been discussed, but I haven't seen it. Why was laura in the hospital in the first place? She doesn't seem sick, or to have suffered something serious to be kept in the hospital long enough to befriend someone as much as she did mary. So maybe it was mental trouble.

Edit. something was mentioned in another forum, but not the full answer I was looking for.

I think as we see with her violence towards james that it was probably mental heath reasons

thats a good question - i never even thought of that...i guess i was too caught up in the whole mary/maria/i hate myslef for putting her out of her misery thing.

i haven't played SH2 in awhile, but i could have swore laura didn't have parents around and trust me, a child at that age without parents will adopt you as one if you spend at least a small amount of time with them.

but as for a definite answer, sorry, i can't help you there

We don't know what her illness was, and it doesn't really matter because it's not relevant to the story.

Who's the chick doing the extreme sit-ups in the tub?

I guess, it isn't all that relevant I just thought it was interesting. Here's a half baked theory; Laura was with her parents in the hotel and it burnt down...somehow. Anyway, her parents die, she gets physical or emotionally damaged by it and ends up in the hospital with Mary.

note: I borrowed librally from other post for this theory

Whoever said she was sick? Just because she met Mary at a hospital doesn't mean she was physically or mentally ill. After all: This hospital they met at, St. Jerome's, ostensibly, has Sisters.

I believe mary stayed at St. Jeromes, but was then transfered to Brookhaven when her condition worsened. She met Laura there, that's the only reason Laura would have for going to Silent Hill to find her, in the hospital.

Laura & Mary didn't meet at Brookhaven: Mary was transferred to Brookhaven a week prior the events of Silent Hill 2; Laura specifically states that they met "last year."

Laura went to Silent Hill because Mary told her that's where she was going, to another hospital.

This is a good point.
I was stumbling on this question about why Laura was in the hospital in the first place. But after these few answers to what may have happened with Laura,it's starting to make me think a little.

But why then, if Laura wasn't ill, she said that that nurse what I just don't remember right now, Rachel or something? Laura said that she was THEIR nurse, if Laura wasn't ill, why she said like that?
name: Laura
age: 8
sex: f
job: --

profile: A young girl who was a patient in the same hospital as Mary.
Having no mother of her own, Laura loved Mary as if she were her real
mother.

creator's comment

Her name is taken from the nonfiction work "No Language But a Cry" by
Richard D'Ambrosio, the story of a young girl's search for happiness
while struggling to overcome the scars of abuse. (note: the title of
this book in Japan is something like "Laura, story of a little girl
burned by a frying pan," which refers to an incident in which Laura's
mentally ill parents placed her into a hot frying pan as a baby and
began to cook her alive.)

raison d'etre

Of all the characters, she is the only one who does not hold any darkness
in her heart. It may be that she came to Silent Hill looking for Mary.
To her the town appears to be normal; she does not see any monsters, nor
does she see Maria.
she seems to exhibit a type of bipolar disorder...

she tends to freak out on james at certain points.

She is not violent nor bipolar, she is a child.

Children can be cruel without knowing what "cruel" is. Has anyone seen Mamoru Oshii's "Innocence"?

Yeah, I figured she was ill, it could be otherwise, but it wouldn't seem so.

Well, people can be ill and look normal. Children can look perfectly fine, but have a disease, and Laura being an orphan, would mean that she'd stay at an orphanage. But since she is sick, she stays at St. Jeromes...St. Jeromes must have been a place for sick children without parents, as well as a place for terminally ill patients, like Mary, to stay. What Laura had, I have no idea, but honestly, I don't think it matters... Laura could have been sick for a year, and maybe started to recover by the time Mary had left, or she could still be sick...But since Konami never really tells us...

Also, I don't think she was mentally ill...She just acted like a normal child to me...A little mean and distrusting to James, of course, but otherwise a normal child, in an abnormal situation. Plus, she isn't "affected" by Silent Hill...I'd think a mentally ill child would be more prone to being affected by the town...But Laura pretty much wasn't. And even if she was bipolar or any of that, all she'd really need was pills, maybe a councelor...Not a bed next to a terminally ill patient like Mary.

But that doesn't really confirm whether Laura has mental or physical illness or not. Personally, I think it's physical. I agree completely with Monobrow.
