shiny monsters?

Post by lord decay »

as many of you may have noticed, most of the monsters in silent hill 2 are very shiny. now i, like many of you, got to wondering what that's all about. i came across a fetish called WETLOOK, and considering how much sexual innuendo is in this game, it makes sense. i hope that this helped some of you figure out WTF was up with that in the first place.

Well, some have mannequin part's right? At least one does. Or maybe it's so there more noticable in the dark when u try to sneak past them. It was very hard to see in the dark in SH1 so that's my guess. As for WETLOOK, dunno.

^If you can't say something nice/relevant....

I don't think it particularly pertains to this "wetlook" you mention, though it's always possible. I think they're mostly wet because they're "juicy," and "juicy" in special effects terms means fleshy and rotting. It's just to increase the feeling of being very, very icky monsters in general.

Heh- next time you see some dumb bitch wearing a pair of pants that say "juicy" across her ass, ask her if she knows the other meaning of the word...

Numboy> are you going to edit the post above lain's and explain why you think it's nonsense? if not, you're just spamming.

I agree with lain's explanation. The lying figures are possibly "juicy" because of the acid they spray, or I like to think the monsters are full of diseases so you're not going to want to touch their "gooeyness".

In that case, why aren't the characters "juicy"? No, I think they're wet by design.

Personally I feel that the shininess is analogous to new born babies.

I feel like they are kind of plastic like. thats what I see when looking at them - both the mannequins and the lying figures.

That would make their skin look wet.

Wow. No shit.

I always just thought it was because the monsters were all plasticky, you know - to show that they're not real creatures, that they're synthetic, or something like that.

agreed about it helping them show up in the dark better, but that may have been just an added bonus. i think the mannequins have that plastic look because they're supposed to BE plastic. and i think with the lying figures, it looks like a layer of slime over their bodies, like a toad or something like that. plus, it'd help them slither along the ground. the nurses have that shiny look, to, but not on their clothes. when they were doing the movie there was a comment by the effects guy that christophe wanted the monsters to look plastic, like dolls. if these are all figments of james' imagination or pulled from his mind - whatever - then it could be pulling from the sexual stuff that he's creating them with - you know what i mean, how all the monsters are somewhat sexual in nature - and they have a doll-look, like a blow up doll, or some sort of inanimate mannequin-esque quality for how he views women. or even that they have a corpse-like quality. originally the lying figures had thigh-high boots on that looked like pvc, so that might have been something the creators added. so i think the "wet look" is a pretty good assumption.

I never even thought of shiny when I played the game and anyway shiny means clean and cleanliness is next to godliness. It's true ask The Saint

Then again, it's possible that the shine is just for effect. Just think - would that Pyramid Head rape scene leave as much of a visual impression if the mannequins weren't all glossy and shit? Take a good look next time, I think you'll agree.

Shiney means wet or plastic. Wet could be either oil, water, or any manner of disgusting substances, not excluding piss, semen and shit. Especially when in context with the rusty, dirty world of Silent Hill.

Yeah, shiney means "clean"...

I agree with Watchdog, Man in the Planet and theshaman. It's to enhance visuals and for effect.

i still think it's a fetish thing for james, i've heard something about the lying creatures representing a vagina, with just the one hole in all that mess. now that i think about it, with pyramid head raping them like that maybe that's the most logical explaination.

Pyramid Head is messing around with a lying figure before the first boss fight with him also.
