I don't know the maximum, but you raise the multiplier each time you beat the game.

I'm not sure the maximum matters after a point, though, haha. At 5x you're getting so many bullets, unless you're firing them willy-nilly, you shouldn't run out.

The only other thing I can think of is making sure your operating system is compatible with the game, like if your OS on the box matches the OS the computer is running, that sort of thing.

How scratched is the disc, and have you tried cleaning it?

Definitely this. A game that plays smoothly and isn't frustrating for technical reasons.
