Been sitting on this list for quite some time now, and while it's still a WIP for me, it sounded like it might be of use to some people in the VGM & Other Instrument Sources Discord channel, so I decided to finally publish it:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nisto/sh_samples/master/sh_samples.txt

1. The list includes all samples from the first page up to and including the prior post, with the exception of some sound effects. It's a mess, and there's lots of inconsistencies with names and other stuff to be fixed -- I know! One particular instance to watch out for: the list includes both names from the old pre-cut rips of Titanium Rhythms 1/2, as well as in some cases the proper, plain CDDA names (usually prefixed with a CDDA track number). I might get back to fixing all of these things in the future, but lately I'm just not finding as much free time.

2. A few samples from SH1 may be missing that I've only documented per the individual BGM files. I'll try to get to these in the future as well.

3. Some samples documented in this thread in the past have been debunked from looking at the samples from the game files (primarily SH1-3).

4. I've tried dividing every game up into three sections in following order where applicable to avoid confusion:
  • OST CD tracks
  • gamerip tracks (usually Firebrandx titles)
  • contexts/descriptions (no suitable gamerip title known/available)
5. The document is best viewed with a monospace font and word wrap disabled.

Don't know how much interest there is in this (since the movie is godawful), but since the Silent Hill OSTs are back on Spotify, I gave the Revelations soundtrack a quick listen for the first time. Noticed some stuff from the Zero-G library Dark Skies, particularly in the "Heather in the Fog World" track.

Dark Skies is a really great library for dark ambient stuff. Always thought it sounded a bit Silent Hill-ish.

I listened to the new Yamaoka track for The Medium, The Maw, and I noticed some drum loops from Big Fish Audio's Darkness: Cinematic Sound Design. Figured that he'd end up using that library if he ever returned to Silent Hill. Heh

Yeah that's pretty neat. I thought it had good fitting sound as well for the series. Though I personally found that library lacking in variety and rhythm (if rhythm matters anymore) and uses a lot of high tone sounds.

Yeah, I ended up being not particularly crazy about that library either. I like some of the one shot hit sounds, but never really found much use for any of the other stuff.

Lately, I've been really into Industrial Strength Records stuff. Their Broken and Dark Cinematic libraries are some prime Silent Hill-ish dark ambient/industrial noise material. And their libraries regularly goes on sale for half off, so you can get them dirt cheap.

EDIT 2020-01-02

Some pretty significant discoveries were made on the VGM Discord server recently.

Two libraries that were used in at least SH1:

- SampleCell factory library (Vol. 1 CD-ROM only, volume 2 hasn't surfaced yet, but hopefully soon)
- the original Peter Siedlaczek Orchestra Library (NOT "Advanced Orchestra" or "Classical Choir")

Most notably, we found all remaining unknown samples that were used in ONLY YOU and NOT TOMORROW 1.

As well as perhaps the most prominent string sample in SH1.

Very good findings! I like the idea of the Discord, but I find it very difficult to keep track of every finding, the Discord format is not very friendly for that, is more like a chat room, so I suggest to keep writing every sample finding in this thread, specially for Silent Hill realated samples.

I completely agree on the point that it's not a good place for documentation (especially when the vast majority of the people on there are only interested in Nintendo-related music). Although, at least nowadays, I can't imagine anyone on there using it as a direct source of information either. To me, the Discord server is more of a place to discuss and possibly analyze potential discoveries. Sometimes it is just good to get a second opinion, and it usually is a good place for just that. For proper documentation, people on the Discord server usually use public spreadsheets on Google Docs so that several users can collaborate and help add in whatever finds are posted in one of the chats.

Regardless, since it's been rather quiet here lately, the Discord server has been a decent spot to get some feedback. kabulent and SynaMax on there have shown a lot of interest in Silent Hill as well, and actually made some of the finds listed in my previous post. Also, some interesting libraries are occasionally discovered, so it puts you a bit more in the know.

And for the record, I post all new Silent Hill sample discoveries here, so don't worry about that.

As it's been a while since this thread has had activity, I should probably mention that I and some others on the VGM Discord server have been continuing to make Silent Hill sample findings over the past few months (recently the scream in Until Death was found for instance). We've been listing these findings as well as noting older ones in a Google Sheet (as Nisto mentioned previously), which can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... ySDLF2eZa4

It's mostly complete for the first four games, although the section for later games still needs to be worked on. Hopefully it can act as an easily usable list for SH samples, especially since the Discord server itself isn't good for storing findings.

^Thanks for that!

Sorry for being mia from this thread for so long. Glad to see you guys are keeping things going!

I haven't been intentionally looking for SH related stuff for a long while, but recently I was digging through a random old library and ran across the beat for Walk on Vanity Ruins (sort of?). I was thinking maybe that one had been found at some point, but I don't see it listed in the doc. The library is called Lo-Fi Acoustic from a company called Audio Genetics. But as far as I can tell this company just compiled a bunch of samples from various other companies and sold them as their own, so who knows where it originated from. Also I'm not sure if Yamaoka is using some other variation of this loop or has another loop layered on top. Here's what I got:

Interesting, never heard of that library before, and I can't say I've heard that sample anywhere else. Do you know where I can find a copy? Kabulent's put a placeholder finding on the spreadsheet for the meantime though and I'll look at some other libraries, see if I can't find it.

So, slightly ironic that the WOVR beat is still the most recent topic in here, because today we finally did discover the (hopefully) original source that Yamaoka used. He combines two loops from the library, actually.

Check the second sample in this, straight after the waterphone at 00:02. That’s the same sample as you’ll hear in “Devils call” from SH2

https://youtu.be/pfQCIBeNCZI

I wonder if those scary in-game sound effects have ever been found, such as that one? Or the one from “After” from SH2, or that gnarly synth sound that plays while you’re in the labyrinth (SH2)?
