Actually, anyone can go to Silent Hill. Innocents have had a paradise (to them anyways) in Silent Hill's otherworld before (within games series canon). The movie's universe hasn't really fleshed out what exactly draws people into it's alternate dimision, but with what's given it seems to work as you said.

I know it's a Downpour cameo; my point was to illustrate how it doesn't quiiiite work as a story bit in the film, whereas Travis does.

>I can't see any reason the sirens would be on if they were just escorting a bus.<
It's not just a bus. It's a bus full of prisoners. The sirens are to alert other people on the road to get the fuck out of the way 'cuz if this shit crashes you've gotta deal with a handful of murderers and rapists and whatever other sick fucks are in here.

Where I live, when police are escorting prisoners, they use the sirens (as The Adversary said) in order to alert the people, I think that's pretty common anywhere.
On the other hand, why are they going to Silent Hill? I guess we'll never know.

I don't see any problem with the addition of Travis at the end. Whether Travis did or did not exist before and Origins had or had not existed in the films universe, I guess using him with a now-grown-up Heather is totally harmless in addition to being a fun nudge to fans.

I loved the idea of a SH2-related sequel in the end and I'd love to see it but this time leave the cult out of it and make it a much darker, romantic and longer film if SH2 is next in the line.

What irritated me is that the film was crazily short and the events went by so fast while he could've used a much more elements from the rich universe of Alessa/Cheryl and the games based on them.

I'm actually kind of surprised at how many people seem to think Travis or the Downpour bus are actual sequel bait--someone on Tumblr seemed to get legitimately mad at me for saying they're not making a Downpour movie.

I think it has the option for sequel bait. I mean, I know what the obvious sequel would be, and I sort of hope that is not what they go with if they move forward with a sequel at all. So for what its worth, between the 3 or so references at the end I think they could easily say "Hey, if we are making another, and Sean Bean and Rahda Mitchelll don't feel like returning, we could look into that bus at the end of the film. Or that truck driver."

I'm reaching, I know, but I wouldn't rule it out completely. Hell, the Haunted House at Universal Studios mixed the films and Downpour so I'd say there is always possibility.

I think it is an option, but I think moreover it's a nod to the games--if anything was sequel bait, it was Harry and Rose in the Otherworld.

DistantJ wrote:I mean in my opinion it was a pretty deep film if you take it in visually rather than just expect the dialogue to spoonfeed it all to you, but others on here have accused me of reading too far between the lines. Personally I believe that there was a lot of meaning to the film and I didn't have to look too far to find it.

It'd be nice to give Chris/Harry a story trying to find Rose. After the first film I'd really like to see the two reunited. So long as it treated it as an original story for Chris and Rose, NOT a lame shoehorned in Silent Hill 2 adaptation.

I love Silent Hill 4's concept, but I don't think I'd want a movie of it because I think it's already been done better than an SH4 adaptation would with the film 1408. You should give it a shot, it's based on the Stephen King novel that supposedly inspired SH4, and it takes some inspiration from SH4 as well.

More than anything else though I'd love to see them follow through with the Travis cameo and complete Alessa's story with an Origins adaptation (if they can somehow retcon him into the burning where officer Gucci played Travis' role in the first film's flashback).
When you see how people overanalyze every single detail in the first games, they should accept others to do the same with the movies. Anyway,
I don't think you're overanaylizing

They weren't totally random. Heather needed picking up at the end. Might as well be Travis or someone who looks like him. Not only was the prison bus a nod to Downpourbut a way of saying that one person's story ends another begins.

I think all three were Bassetts way of giving people easy outs in terms of sequels as Gans made it hard on whoever followed up his work.

Also, not only was the bus a Downpour Cameo, it was a cool way to show that even after Heather leaves Silent Hill and the Fog lifts....Its not over.....Silent Hill will continue to draw people in....There are many Silent Hills after all. :)

Sorry, I didn't see that you had already brought that up. lol

That's ok. We agree. I hope that it's just setting up the idea that we might get a brand new story next time.

I never felt that Harry stayed to look for his wife so we would get Silent Hill 2 next time. The link seems a bit tenuous.

I think an original story would be the best way to go. I even think they should slash the budget a little more, make the movie more intimate and take some major risks with it. Silent Hill doesn't have to be full of flash...A solid story coupled with a nice dark atmosphere would be the way to go.

In an interview following the movie's release, Bassett expressed special interest in "Downpour". One can *assume* that downpour would be the follow up, but I for one don't believe this will ever happen.....ever.

Could you find the interview in question for me? I could've sworn he said he liked it but it didn't need to be a movie.

I never said he wanted it to be. Only that you can assume due to his "special" interest in Downpour that they *could* make it. But just so things will be clear. Here's a quote from the site I read:
When asked about future sequels, Bassett said he'd like to look at Silent Hill graphic novels for inspiration for plots rather than strictly the games (although he did express a fondness for Downpour), particularly citing Silent Hill: Past Life as being of interest.
And here's the page.

The reason he had a special fondness for Downpour is because he was allowed to go watch them work on the game and meet with development team....He's stated a few times that he is still in the process of playing through the game.

Well, when you put it like THAT.....

Anyway, at some point someone is going to look towards the newer games to adapt. I just hope they start doing *fresh* original stories before that happens. But no point in flushing when you still have to shit.

Maybe it would work better if Silent Hill was turned into a series, along the lines of Kingdom Hospital, or something similar. I always got a Silent Hill vibe from that series.

He tried to rush through it in 90 minutes and he missed all the subtleties
