Is OD the PT/Silent Hills successor?

Post by jdnation »

Worth a new topic, from the Overdose thread...
https://silenthillforum.com/viewtopic.p ... 17#p700117

Double Post Bump

Something pretty significant!

People have spotted letters in the mouth of Udo.

I'll let this video explain:
https://youtu.be/ulYOgObdr-s?si=G4k_GmV4WyWcT8Hs

The letters in order spell out ATAMI

Atami is a Japanese city in Shizuoka Prefecture known for its onsen hot springs and literally means "hot ocean."

Shizuoka's kanji letters are also the same ones that spell "Silent Hill."

https://bichi.fandom.com/wiki/Silent_Hi ... 0franchise.

"Shizuoka Prefecture (Jap. 静岡). If we translate the name literally from Japanese, 静 means "quiet, silent" and 岡 means "hill"."

So, yep, as is obvious, Kojima is letting it be known that OD will be carrying forward some of his ideas intended for Silent Hills.

I always wondered if Kojima would eventually take his Silent Hills ideas and apply them elsewhere. I would not be surprised if this game is Silent Hills (not in a literal sense, but the completed version of that game's vision).

Recall that in PT - 7780 Studios was a reference to the postal code of Shizuoka.

He's taking many of his ideas there, certainly. But Silent Hills was set to be a traditional console release with at best some non-mandatory online connectivity and interaction as in Death Stranding.

OD seems to be specifically a Cloud project, initially intended for Google Stadia and now for Microsoft. Basically Kojima wants to do something not tied to console hardware and making full use of streaming from more powerful servers and interacted with using tablets and cell phones. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

The basic idea for OD/Overdose, being that you overdose on horror. And from the sound of this project having multiple collaborators, like Jordan Peele, who may be standing in for Del Toro, it could likely be episodic with different creators and actors collaborating on different stories within a universe. A franchise that can be ongoing and done on the side without interfering with more larger traditional console projects like DS2.

What I'm afraid of is that because of this rift, SH as a concept will be sort of..... split. Kojima is......................... look, if you love him you love him. But watching the recent State of Play where there's, um.... I guess sentient puppets? And neck gloves? There's a dude with an attack guitar? And Samurai babies? nope, out y'lost me, no thanks.

It's like Nomura and Kingdom Hearts- I *WANT* to love you, but because no one seemingly ever said no to them because they ARE an exceptional font of creativity, they also lack editing, so stories grow wild and untenable. And as with bonsai trees, the whole idea is to let the thing grow and flourish- but with editing to keep it in line, to be a thing of beauty within the concept.
You were missed. You'll be missed. I am missing you.

It's funny because it's like Tarantino or Tool. You either love their style or your scratching your head wondering how this got greenlit. It's unapologetic pretention, well researched, over contextual pretention.I personally love it and think it may be the best trailer I've seen in the last 5 years lol.

Kojima understands genre. P.T. never had anything excessively out of place with it's experience. Even the concept teaser filled with various imagery was consistent. So I don't think there is anything to worry about in this regard. Whereas Metal Gear and Death Stranding offer greater range to include out-there ideas. Many, to serve gameplay purposes. Fighting ninjas and guitar railgun dudes make for more interesting boss fights. OD will focus more on scares and tension, so I don't think it will lean heavily upon mechanics, especially when streaming from the cloud.

Rewatching the first teaser trailer, my mind came up with the most insane theory regarding gameplay. In the teaser we see people's faces, but we cannot really see what they're seeing except for some tiny reflections in their eyes. So, what if the whole game (or parts of it) are played through this extremely unique point-of-view, where you'd have to guide the protagonist and fight/avoid monsters based on what you see in the reflection of their eyes. I mean, talk about scary. You see something coming, but you can't really make out what it is - but you know that it's coming right towards the person you're guiding.

Presuming it's legit, the leaked gameplay trailer is of course nothing like that - but it looks like a rough build so who knows. Nevertheless, my theory is probably wrong but now that I'm thinking about this concept I cannot let it go. I want that kind of horror game to exist. Now.
I EAT GALAXIES FOR BREAKFAST.

I have a feeling he will take ideas for the actual horror aspects but maybe not whatever gameplay and certainly not setting Silent Hills was supposed to have. Hopefully this will be one of the games Microsoft allows on PlayStation.

Considering it is specifically built for XCloud, I'm guessing it is unlikely, not that PS+ couldn't make it viable, but OD is specifically being made not to be limited to Xbox series hardware, and I don't know if Sony's side facilitates any servers running hardware above PS5 spec.

Though, in light of Xbox's more recent problems and strategic changes, this project could either get canceled or become a significant part of their Play Anywhere Gamepasscampaign. Meaning it could make it on PlayStation if Sony allows Gamepass streaming, but that's highly unlikely.

It'd be cheaper and easier to subscribe to PC Gamepass to try it.

I doubt anything in OD is incompatible with PS5 and with Microsoft slowly becoming 3rd party I expect to see it on other consoles at some point.

It's not about the PS5 hardware. Even PS4 and Gamepass dongles on TVs can do it.

OD is pushed as cloud-only. That requires subscription and streaming. Possibly with some required software downloaded locally, but it is being pushed as a heavily cloud-dependant game.

The question is, what is Sony's cloud set-up? They literally have PS3 blades in the servers to stream PS3 games. Are their servers as good as Microsoft's?

Then there is how Microsoft wants to release this. It sound episodic. Is it sold episodically? Or is it Gamepass subscriber only? Are there any actual cloud-only games available that are purchasable without subscription?

If it is Gamepass only, then PS will not get it unless they reach a specific 3rd party deal unique to this that runs it on Sony's servers.

Maybe I'm just missing something obvious here, but why would it need to run on Sony's servers? Couldn't a potential PS5 release still just access the same servers as the Xbox release since the game is streamed through the cloud anyway?

It's not technically impossible, only unlikely due to Sony and Microsoft seeing each other as direct competitors regarding services, and becomes an issue of revenue and user sharing. That cloud access over PSN is sub-only is a hurdle that is not direct purchase.

Sony would much rather have the game on their own servers and deal with Xbox like any other 3rd party rather than have some unique scenario where Microsoft tries to negotiate more revenue because they are the host. Also then it becomes an extra hurdle of user accounts - will PSN accounts need an Xbox account to be tied to it, and will Microsoft count them as Xbox accounts and use them for metrics or to juice their figures? Etc. Etc. So there are all kinds of complications on the service front...

The accounts are the biggest thing. It's why Sony has recently been forcing PC gamers to get PSN accounts. And why you cannot access several apps on PS without being logged into PSN. Sony wants to boast high numbers of users and track your data and habits to inform their services and also sell this user data to 3rd parties, like every company. It's highly valuable, and they don't want Microsoft trojan horsing their way into learning anything about PSN's users or back end.

So if OD comes to PS, it will likely only be as any other 3rd party deal, running locally over PSN. Technically, Sony could use Azure services from Microsoft's other division, as long as it's not Microsoft Games, and data is legally kept confidential from Microsoft's gaming side.
