What the 'f' stands for

Post by saevitia »

It appears to me to be the 'f' used in musical notation for "forte" which means "play loudly".

Or maybe Flauros.

We know the effects of Silent Hill can pervade other nearby areas., It could potentially tie in with my whole theory that it's actually the Flauros that creates or at least amplify these effects elsewhere. And from SILENT HILL: ORIGINS, we know the Flauros has been all over the world — including China and England.

So maybe it was in a lake in Japan either in the past or present day. It's been lost since the end of the first SILENT HILL, after all.

That's probably a long-shot but it was my first thought.

This was my first and immediate reaction, too!

Don't forget that F is also the 6th letter in the alphabet.

This game is the most intriguing aspect of the entire announcement.

A source at Konami told me It stands for either "flower" or "floral".

My head cannon tells me it’s frequency, as in radio frequency, but it’s probably flower. I’d like to know how this Japanese setting connects to the American town of Silent Hill and how it relates to the more modern setting of Sakura. Maybe there’s some kind of hub like travel as in Silent Hill 4? Someone also speculated it is Silent Hill but someone with past trauma brought their culture with them to SH?

SILENT HILL: THE ADVERSARY would be a much better title, if we're being honest.

I think it's hilarious we still talk about DamienPales when he hasn't been seen in absolute ages.

Well all jokes aside, it's definitely a music notation. The logo style has Silent Hill in calligraphy brush letters, but the f is in the distinctly 'forte' symbol.
The dynamic symbol for loud is called forte (FOR-tay), and looks like the letter f. The dynamic symbol for soft is called piano (Pe-AH-no, the same as the musical instrument) and looks like the letter P. The dynamic symbol for very loud is two forte symbols. This is called fortissimo (for-TEE-see-mo).
Basically, when you see this symbol on your sheet music, that part needs to be played loud, as opposed to something soft, so if this were piano, you hit the keys harder for a more impactful sound, versus a gentler melody.

So that's interesting. This is Silent Hill played with a hard 'loud sound.'

Does sound have something to do with gameplay? Something to do with radio frequencies? Perhaps music?

Or is the 'loud' more of an Art terminology, for something, bright, colorful and gaudy? Even psychedelic? Something that 'screams and forces people to take notice of it precisely because it is trying hard to stand out? Something that usually emphasizes emotion over form?

It could be the style of the art direction and color palette they are going for. The art studio and designers they have working on this are known for very colorful and attractive concept art.

So this is very likely poised as a break with traditional Silent Hill in more ways than just era and location.

So the 'f' is more of a statement of developer intent than of story as far as we know.
