SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
So I haven't beaten the game yet and only just got to the hospital, but I've already noticed quite a few Easter eggs and references to the original game and other games in the series. There's already a thread about that though, so why did I make another one? Because I'm not convinced these are just Easter eggs.
SPOILERS AHEAD
In particular, I'm thinking of the Jack's Inn and Baldwin Mansion Easter eggs. Room 106 is where Heather and Douglas stayed in SH3 and in this game it looks like they put Douglas's hat there as a reference. However, James comments on the room being "weird" or "strange" (I can't remember the exact wording). And then there's the Baldwin Mansion from Born From A Wish. In the remake, Maria acts like she can't remember if she had been there before, like it's this bad memory.
To me, all this seems like strong evidence towards the "loop" theory. Does James feel uncomfortable in Room 106 because Douglas and Heather are currently in there? Like he's been stuck in a loop for so long that he's caught up to SH3 in the timeline? Is Maria weird about the Baldwin Mansion because she's been there before, just not in this current loop? There's other things too, like the strange callbacks to where you originally got the radio in the game and old Pyramid Head boss room at the apartments.
So what do you all think? Just some fun references or is there more to it?
Edit: Apparently there was also a faded Halo of the Sun in Room 106 that I missed, so that's even more damning evidence!

Re: SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
I have a theory that the original SH2 locations have a connection to one of the new endings. There could be an ending that points towards the loop theory. I was talking with my SO while playing last night about the possibility that they pull a Final Fantasy 7 Remake and this is actually a pseudo-sequel to Silent Hill 2 instead of just a remake.

I was thinking the same thing. I really hope this is the case, I've always found the idea fascinating and I think it would add more to the series than just being a straightforward remake.leftshoe18 wrote: ↑07 Oct 2024 I have a theory that the original SH2 locations have a connection to one of the new endings. Re: SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
I believe the "loop theory" will apply but only to one of the new endings. I've only beaten it once so far so I'm not sure what those endings are, though, or if one even pertains to that.
I didn't notice the Halo of the Sun in room 106. It is found on the back of a note toward the end of the game. Only it's not the Halo of the Sun we're familiar with it — it's deconstructed. All the individual parts are drawn, just not in a circle.

I believe, like Capcom, they have created assets so, fingers crossed, it will be easier to reuse them when they remake 1 and 3.

Re: SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
There is far too much evidence towards the idea of some kind of loop for it to be nothing. The old puzzles you find in their original locations, already solved. Stuff like the broken fence on Brookhaven's roof, comments like James assuming Maria wouldn't want to go into Pete's Bowl-O-Rama because she didn't in the original. There's way too much. Even if they don't play into one of the two new endings (I haven't gotten them myself but from what I've heard people say they might be mostly ambiguous), I think the intention is clear.
Also the Halo of the Sun in Room 106 is only found if you go back to the room after the hospital, for those who missed it.

Spoiler for anyone who has not played the game !!!!
OK, so I think this is the best spot for this.
I watch a Youtuber named Beardo Benjo that does videos where he puts video games in VR mode and he loves Silent Hill.
Look what he found....

No, you're good! Just letting you know it was mentioned — no sense in it not being mentioned here.Utherworld wrote: ↑10 Oct 2024Not part of the discord. Thought it should be posted here. In the original, the shopping cart in which James finds the handgun has a logo on its side, one that I managed to identify way back in the day but that knowledge has since been lost. Well, it was replaced in SILENT HILL 2: REMAKE with none other than SILENT HILL's Convenience Store 8, where Harry can visit in the original SILENT HILL.

Re: SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
As for the Easter eggs referencing previously solved puzzles in the original, I think they're just that - references for us old fans to enjoy.
SPOILERS/ENDINGS
In hindsight, there is no new "loop ending" as some people anticipated. At best, we have a new alternative version of In Water which is the Stillness ending. As powerful and well-acted as that ending was, I'm not sure if I like the idea of having alternate versions of exisiting endings since it somehow weakens the impact of the latter. I would've preferred if Stillness ended in a different way, like for example having James simply ride back the way he came from.

Re: SPOILERS/Story- References or something more?
To me, there's just too many Easter eggs for them to just be Easter eggs. It goes beyond just the "Glimpses of the Past" you can interact with, there's weird notes and even dialogue like James acting confused that Maria would want to enter the bowling alley. There's so much of it, I feel like it has to mean something.Jonipoon wrote: ↑17 Oct 2024 As for the Easter eggs referencing previously solved puzzles in the original, I think they're just that - references for us old fans to enjoy.

SPOILERS for endings:
Regarding the new Stillness ending, I'm not convinced it's just an extension of the In Water ending. Sure, you need to have gotten the latter first to get the new one and they share some of the same dialogue, but there's something off about the new ending. The audio after it fades to black is different from In Water, implying that maybe James got out of the car? I think this Reddit post and its comments have the best speculation I've read so far: https://www.reddit.com/r/silenthill/com ... are_button .
But perhaps discussion of this ending should get its own thread?
I think the two new endings can be viewed with the loop theory in mind personally. I was initially bummed we didn't get a true loop ending, but that would require James realizing he's in one, right?
