Combat Strategies? (Gameplay Spoiler)
I'm routinely using a health item for every combat encounter, and with supplies so low, it's bringing me back to the first time I played the original RE4 (which I eventually conquered). The mannequins in particular are a pain when they gang up on and/or ambush you.
Does anyone have any advice to lend on how to fight more effectively? I found out the hard way that Lying Figures can also puke on you as they lay dying, which was a rude awakening. The combat is bordering on Soulsborne for me, but even then I had more estus/tears, etc. than this. It makes me reload my saves if I get too hurt or run out of heals before I progress, which is slowing me down when there's a lot of activity between save points. It's a lot harder to sneak by enemies indoors than in the original.

The Lying Figure puke thing is super cheap.
It depends upon the difficulty, but if you're doing okay for ammo (on standard, I always felt I had loads apart from the 30m or so after a boss fight) I'd shoot to get them down, and then finish with melee. Otherwise, remember James can dodge - I spent the ENTIRE AD and 2PH fights dodging constantly!

I still manage to get smacked when dodging. I try to "stick-and-move", which is decent, but not foolproof.
I'll say that when I knock an LF down, I stomp once and immediately get out of the way. When they sit up is when they spray, but I didn't get my first LF to do that until the 3rd floor of Woodside, so I never saw it coming. Not a single one before that had done it, and I had killed many.

I had to remap that button because in the OG that's how you looked at the map lol.NightFlutter wrote: ↑08 Oct 2024 I'm routinely using a health item for every combat encounter, and with supplies so low, it's bringing me back to the first time I played the original RE4 (which I eventually conquered). From what I have seen the best way to handle mannequins and lying figures is to shoot them in the leg, so they go down on 1 knee, then you can knock them over with melee hit and get the stomp in.
I'm going to town either way.........

Re: Combat Strategies? (Gameplay Spoiler)
I just started with my girlfriend on Light Combat and I swear we're still getting out asses handed to us by the Lying Figures. Seems like 3-4 hits puts you in the red. Light Combat seems like Resident Evil's normal.
What works for me(at least outside) is to let them do the puke attack and dodge around it until you get to its side or back and just swing away since it's rooted in place until it's done puking. Usually this lets me get in quite a few swings.
More to follow.

You can take my heart
And hold it together as we fall apart
Maybe together we can make a mark in the stars we embark
And keep us together as the lights go dark

I just sprint headlong at the Lying Figures to get that first hit in. Being aggressive with them seems to work.

Re: Combat Strategies? (Gameplay Spoiler)
I didn't have some of their attack patterns down until well after the halfway point. I had to start playing it less like Silent Hill and more like Dark Souls. lol
I'm not even kidding. My best advice is to slow down and only go for counter-hits. Learn what each attack's telegraph is (they do all have one) and learn the timing. Once they wind up, dodge at the right time and go for ONE or at most TWO attacks before backing off and baiting out their next attack. Unfortunately the dodge is NOT a Dark Souls dodge, it doesn't feel great here, especially when you end up pointed in the wrong direction or too far away to get a good attack in. But nothing can be done about that, at least you're less likely to take damage.
And ALWAYS back off of Otherworld Lying Figures when they go down lol. You can tell which ones are gonna do it based on their appearance.

Re: Combat Strategies? (Gameplay Spoiler)
Leg-shots certainly help, if Resident Evil 4 ever taught me anything. That works best on Lying Figures and nurses.
I played on Light Combat mode so here are my go-tos for each one.
Lying Figure: Don't strike first unless it's facing the other direction. If it's already facing you, wait for it to spit, then dodge sideways and run up to strike. On Light Combat it takes 3-4 hits to kill (usually 3) so you can usually knock it down before it counterattacks, but if not strike twice, then jump back, wait for its attack, and then go in for a third and fourth hit.
If it's facing the other direction, and you have enough space, I run up to it from 10-15 feet away and give it a hefty swing. Oftentimes that alone will knock it down (I think it's similar to the secret steel pipe attack in the original when playing on Hard Combat). It seems to do more damage.
Mannequins: Since they usually just appear out of absolutely nowhere, they're usually already on your ass, but if you can avoid that I usually always try to take them down with a couple shots to the abdomen and then finish them off quick. Mannequins retaliate a little quicker than Lying Figures, so I'll often take one swing, jump back, and then go for a combo-attack.
Nurses: You can usually see them from a distance, and they tend to stand around at times, so I'll kill my flashlight and take a running attack (like mentioned above). Normal nurses go down with one of those, whereas the [otherside] nurses are bitches and can take up to 8 hits to take down. And when they hoard in hallways the shotgun is practically the only way to go, 'cuz sometimes you'll find yourself in situations in close quarters with a couple nurses, a Lying Figure, and a Mannequin, all on top of you at once.
Mandarins: I don't fuck with Mandarins and I don't recommend you fuck with them, either. The only way to really get through their passages without getting hit is to run while constantly dodging. That will usually get you through any corridor unscathed, just — always plan your route ahead of time.
